Edstaston sale topper, £5,100
Edstaston Charollais sale hits £5,100
A CELEBRATION of 40 years breeding Charollais sheep culminated in a £5,100 top price for the online reduction of the adult female portion of Robert and Jeanette Gregory's Edstaston flock, Shrewsbury.
Hitting the top price when selling to Dave Roberts, Shrewsbury, was a 2023-registered ewe by 4,400gns Dalby Ancelotti. Its dam is Edstaston Tamsin which is by the former breed record-priced Knockin Shockin and out of Edstaston Madison which won many inter-breed titles on the show circuit.
Messrs Roberts paid a further £3,900 for a shearling gimmer by Boyo Commander and out of Edstaston Wasabi.
A different Messrs Roberts, this time from Holyhead, paid £4,100 for a full sister to the £3,900 gimmer as well as £1,750 for another Boyo Commander-sired gimmer.
Another Boyo Commander-sired gimmer sold to Messrs Moseley, Shrewsbury, for £1,900, alongside the aforementioned Edstaston Tamsin for £1,800.

Messrs Martin, Fifehead Neville, paid £1,650 for a 2024-registered ewe by Tullyear Artemis, while an Edstaston Bombardier-sired gimmer sold to Messrs Jones, Llanybydder, for £1,600.
Averages – 17 shearling gimmers, £1,521; 23 ewes, £1,235.

My Girl leads Summer Sizzlers
A BELTEX ewe lamb headed up the online Summer Sizzlers sale when Gary Beacom, Co Fermanagh, sold Lakeview My Girl for £4,300.
The February-born, embryo-bred Lakeview My Girl is by the 20,000gns Logie Durno Jack Daniels which was champion at the Beltex Premier Sale in 2023. Its dam is the 2025 Irish National champion, Lakeview Jungle Princess, which is by the 45,000gns Lurg Grand Slam and an embryo sister to the £18,000 Kelso Ram Sales record-holder, Lakeview Jackaroo. The buyer was Messrs Hill, Shepton Mallet.
Next best at £3,200 when sold to Messrs Paterson, Newmains, was Cumbria-based Oliver Watson's Suffolk gimmer, Irt Vale Dancing Queen. Bred from a Strathbogie ewe, it is by the 15,000gns Maidenstone Magician.
Finn Christie's Maidenstone Suffolk gimmer from Inverurie, sold to Messrs Bourne, North Tawton, for £2,700. Its sire is the 28,000gns Castleisle Blackadder while its dam is a Howgillfoot ewe.
Messrs Dodd, Lockerbie, paid £1,900 for a Lurg Beltex gimmer from Alan Miller, Inverurie. Bred from Lurge Hey Fancy Pants, its sire is the 21,000gns Faughhill Kealey.
Close behind on £1,800 was Rolex Just the One, a Dutch Spotted ewe lamb by Diamond Idol from A. Colhoun, Co Tyrone. It is out of Rolex Felicity, and sold to Messrs Cornish, Buckfastleigh.
The Ingram family, Inverurie, sold the dearest of the Charollais entries for £1,700 to Shepard Partnerhsip, Wimborne. Their Loanhead gimmer is by Foxhill Va Va Voom.

Strong lamb trade at Darlington
WITH nine active ringside buyers, new season lambs at Darlington were up more than 100p/kg and £47/head compared to the same week last year as the 902 traded to average 477p/kg or £210.46/head.
With 257 lambs over the 500p/kg mark, heavy lambs were in demand as 65 sold in excess of £250/head.
Selling for the top price per kilo was half a dozen lambs weighing 45kg from J.C. Simpson, Caldwell, which hit 548p/kg (£248/head), followed at 543p/kg (£223/head) for a pair of 41kg Beltex from A.W.S.M. Farms, Hutton Magna.
A single Texel cross Suffolk weighing 55kg from William Swinbank, Caldwell, led the gross trade at £288/head (523p/kg), followed at £267 for eight weighing 52kg from Messrs Simpson.
Plenty of lightweight lambs and Mule-bred lambs traded consistently at £190 to £210.

Breeding cattle hit £4,800 at Skipton
AN entry of 56 breeding cattle sold through Skipton peaked at £4,800 for a 2021-born Simmental Luing cow with three-month-old Simmental steer calf at foot from J.F. and C. Saunders, Ulverston.
Next at £4,200 was a British Blue cross Montbeliarde with Angus-sired heifer calf from C. Rathmell, Tong.
The ongoing reduction from T.H. and K. Wood, Harrogate, reached £4,000 three times for young Limousins.

Feeding bulls levelled at £2,067.76 for 116, with a top of £2,900 paid for a 28-month-old pure British Blue from J.T.C. Excavations, Sowerby Bridge, with Limousins to £2,650 from Alan Lodge, Malham Moor.
A mixed entry of store cattle sold to £2,410 for a Limousin steer from Fair Place Farm, Cowling, with native steers to £2,120 for Aberdeen-Angus from R.G. and A.R. Clegg, Clitheroe.
A heifer from Messrs Down and Hyslop, Settle, led the section at £2,480 with natives to £2,240 for an Angus from Harewood Farming, Harewood.ÌýÌý

Champion pair top Barnard Castle
ALL classes of spring lambs were in demand and short of requirements at Barnard Castle where the champion pair from the pre-sale show went on to top the entry at 697p/kg and £275/head.
That wasÌý the champion pair of Beltex lambs consigned by B. and J.B. Beadle, Staindrop, as picked out by judge, James Birkbeck, Soulby.
The reserve ticket went to a pair of Beltex lambs from M. Gleave, Copley, which realised 483p/kg or £222/head.
The first-prize pair of Mule-bred continentals from W.F. and D.M. Metcalf, Barningham sold for £205/head.
Hoggs reached 396p/kg and £234/head for Texels from P.C. Langstaff, Woodland, while cast ewes sold to £250 for a Beltex from J.B. and J.A. Fenwick, Barnard Castle.

Cattle sell well at Leek
NEARLY all milking entries passed the £2,000 mark at the June pedigree dairy day at Leek where a top of £4,000 was paid for a heifer from the Shepherd family, Bakewell.Ìý
Selling to the Hargreaves family, Cresswell, giving 31kg, Meldamar Mecca Eilwen 241 boasts an Ex90-rated grand-dam that recorded 80-tonnes in its lifetime.Ìý
Red Earth Farms, Leek, paid £3,800 and £3,750 for two from the Critchlow family, Cubley. Dearest was an Applejax daughter giving 30kg while the other was by Delta Wirdum.
A Raiton heifer from John Allen, Tutbury, sold to Messrs Burton, Harpur Hill, for £3,700.Ìý
A run of seven from Messrs Eason, Okerthorpe, topped at £3,600, while the Flower family, Friden, sold four Danish Red cross heifers to £3,400.Ìý
