Charolais dominate beef championship at South of England Show

After first claiming the male championship, the Charolais bull, Goldstar Ulysses, went on to take the supreme inter-breed beef title for Thor Atkinson, Ulverston. Fresh from taking the inter-breed title at Staffordshire Show and reserve inter-breed at Devon County, the September 2023-born son of Neptune JC out of Goldstar Scarlette, was bought privately from breeder, Martin Ryan, Co Tipperary, as a yearling.

Standing reserve overall after winning the female championship, was Ulysses' ET sister, Goldstar Une Star, a Ìýheifer in-calf to Tophill Oscar. The pair were also reserve in the Burke Trophy at Devon County Show.

Judge, Paul Walker, Staffordshire, said his champion was ‘full of power, moved well and had great style.'

Mr Atkinson also took the reserve male title with Arradfoot Underdog, an August 2023-born Limousin bull by Goldies Jackpot.

The reserve female championship went to the any other breed champion, Wareham's Voluptuous, a home-bred British Blue yearling heifer by Solwayview Firecracker from Jason and Sarah Wareham, Heathfield.

National Dexter Show

The show also hosted the National Dexter Show where the championship went to the 15-year-old bull, Moomin Harris by Moonmin Maximillian out of Moomin Honey, which was being shown for the first time since a calf. Harris was bred by Di Smith, Ashford, and is owned by Amy and Marc Hamlett who run 100 Dexter cows near Tiverton, Devon.

For the second year running the female championship at the breed's national show went to Jordeth Sammie, a home-bred October 2020-born cow by Brennan Llewellyn from Jean Nuttall, Blackburn.

Dairy

A small entry of dairy cattle were led by the Ayrshire champion, Cuthill Towers Horizon Rae, a December 2022-born heifer by ÌýWillhome Pams Horizon from David Heasman, who milks 15 cows from his Pylon herd near Uckfield, selling all the milk direct to the public. Mr Heasman won the heifer in prize draw in 2023 held as part of the Ayrshire World conference.

ÌýStanding reserve was the any other breed champion, Brinsbury Baroness 32, an August 2024-born in-calf Dairy Shorthorn heifer by Amber Firefox.
Exhibited by Brinsbury College, Pulborough, and shown by one of the students, Louise Ford, it was competing for the first time.

Sheep

There was a strong line-up in front of sheep inter-breed judge, Tom Blunt, Shrewsbury, who chose as supreme the Suffolk champion. This was a home-bred three-shear ewe by a Frongoy-bred ram from Sally Ann and Kevin Hasemore, Chichester, who were winning an inter-breed title for the first time.

In reserve was the Southdown champion, a home-bred shearling ewe from the Sargent, Wakeham-Dawson and Harmer team's Ridings flock, ÌýLewes. By prolific show winner, Ridings Market Gardner, it was being shown for the first time.

Mr Blunt said the Suffolk ewe caught his eye as soon as it came into the ring as it moved well, had a good topline and fantastic style, but his reserve was a great example of the breed which handled very well.

Pigs

Emily Paddock, Staffordshire, claiming her first inter-breed pig title at the show with her British Saddleback gilt, July 2025-born Lewin Lady 6. In-pig for September, it was reserve breed champion at Bath and West and will be heading the Royal Three Counties Show next.

Oliver Giles, Billinghurst, took the reserve champion rosette with Tedford Lena 274, a September 2025-born Duroc gilt.
Judge, Tracey Bretherton, Preston, said it was a very good inter-breed but the Saddleback gilt just had the edge as it walked well and had a good top line and feet.
