Sales round up: North Country Cheviots to £20,000, Swaledale ewes to £900 at Kirkby Stephen and Longhorn record set online

Record average for North Country Cheviots at Lairg

WITH a top price of £20,000 and two more at £18,000, North Country Cheviot rams met a strong demand at Lairg to set a new record average of £2,204 for 255 sold.

Leading the trade at £20,000 was a Borgie ram from Wilma Robertson, Thurso. Among the first sons offered by the £5,500 Lairg purchase, Mowhaugh Constrictor sold to Ted Fox, St Johns Kirk flock, Biggar.

The brace at £18,000 both came from Martyn Cook's Dorrery flock, Halkirk. First when sold to George Irving, Benger flock, Yarrow, was Dorrery Finnesse, a son of the £8,000 Dorrery Dazzler sold at Lairg last year.

Selling to Bob and Becca Rennie, Attonburn flock, Kelso, also for £18,000, was Dorrery FixUpLookSharp, which is sired by the £22,000 Dorrery Dizzee Rascal.

Helping nine Dorrery rams average £8,355 was an unnamed Dorrery entry by the £20,000 Dorrery Dynamite sold in 2024. It sold for £14,000 to David and Norman Douglas, Whitehope flock, Selkirk.

First-time consignors, Tina Robertson and Alasdair Sutherland, Lairg, saw their unnamed Heilan ram sell to Bob and Andrew Adam, Auldallan flock, Forfar, for £14,000. It is by an Instack sire.

The final ram at five figures, at £12,000, was Hethpool Foghorn, a son of Benger Destiny, from David and James Rock, Wooler, which sold to Messrs Cook.

A trio of gimmers from Hughie and Jan Mackenzie's Langdale flock, Kinbrace, set a centre record of £800, with more from the same home at £420.

Second highest female price of £540 was paid for a pair of gimmers from Alasdair Robertson's Tournaig flock, Lairg.

Liam Matheson, Rhinamain flock, Bonar Bridge, sold four gimmers for £400/head.

Ewes peaked at £305/head for a run of 46 from Gavin Ross, Migdale flock, Ardgay, as well as £280/head for a pen from Alan and Sarah-Jayne Forbes, Dalrachie flock, Speyside.

Lluest Lleyn leads

LLEYNS reached 2,800gns at Skipton for the champion, a shearling ram from Dylan and Anwen Jones' Lluest flock, Machynlleth, Powys.

Females sold to £320/head for the winning pen of five shearling ewes from Simon Kavanagh, Skipton, who sold another pen at £310/head.

The best pen of five ewe lambs from Wynne Davies, Pwllheli, sold for £300/head.

A total of five tups sold in excess of 2,000gns as demand outweighed supply.

Averages – Shearling rams, £1,706 (+£1,164 on the year); shearling ewes, £277 (+£26); ewe lambs, £170 (+£48).

Top prices shared at Longtown

TWO steers sold for £2,380 apiece to top the show and sale of 458 store cattle at Longtown.

One at that price was a Limousin cross from S. and S.L. Phillips, Carlisle, while the other was a Charolais cross from Messrs Telford, Carlisle.

The top heifer price of £2,300 was also shared by the champion and reserve. Champion was a Charolais heifer from W.G. and H.M. Kyle, Brampton, while the reserve was a Limousin from Messrs Story, Brampton.

A third heifer at £2,300 was a Charolais from Messrs Phillips.

Milk in demand at Gisburn

R.C. and S.W. Beecroft, Harrogate, topped the 85 head of dairy cattle at Gisburn at £4,000 with a pedigree newly calved heifer from their Hollinshall herd.

Their sale leader was a Siemers Darwin daughter giving 42 litres. The same vendors also sold at £3,800, £3,550 and £3,300. Dearest of these was an AOT Hampshire daughter giving 46 litres.

Second top price of the day came for a 35-litre Rager-Red-sired heifer from the Whytil herd of J. and M. Singleton and Sons, Goosnargh, Preston, which sold at £3,820.

Non-pedigree newly calved heifers reached £3,480 for J. and B. Rowland, Preston.

Messrs Lawson topped the cows at £3,780, with their second-calver and red-rosette winner, Newbirks Adorable Jazz, which had given 13,303 litres in its first lactation and was sold giving 60 litres.

Heifers in-calf to sexed and Angus from G. and E.J. Donaldson, Stokesley, sold to a top of £2,200.

Following the regular sale was a herd dispersal of the milking and in-calf portion for J.B. and C. Lamb, Thurnham, Lancaster, with prices peaking at £2,205 to average £1,410.

Averages - Pedigree heifers, £2,877; pedigree cows, £3,780; non-pedigree heifers, £2,627; non-pedigree cows, £2,345; non-pedigree in-calf heifers, £2,150; pedigree in-calf heifers £1,980; pedigree bulling heifers, £1,688.

Longhorn records set in online sale

A NEW Longhorn record price was set for a junior heifer sold in an online sale and the second highest price paid for a junior heifer at a society sale when Gentons Zena topped the recent online sale at £7,200.

Consigned by Bertie Facon, Banbury, Zena was breed champion at Moreton in Marsh and has twice been part of a native inter-breed pairs champion team. Sired by Bieldside Verdite Ex91 and out of Fishwick Princess Ex91, Zena sold to D. and A. Blockley, Southfield herd, Bradford.

Messrs Facon received a further £5,200 for the senior bull, Gentons Yellowstone, which sold to A. Greetham, Sledgewood herd, Repton. A prize-winner picking up many male championships on the show circuit, it is by Gentons Valor ET VG85 and out of Fishwick Paulina Ex92.

Making £4,100 was Wheatlands Zulu, a junior bull by Southfield Nitro Ex93 from Tom Mills, Bakewell. It sold to A. and H. Broggio, Narracott herd, South Molton.

R. Lee, How Caple herd, Herefordshire, paid £3,600 for Gipsy Hall Zeus by Stoke Quinlan GP84 from A. Brookes, Wilmcote.Ìý

Females also sold to £3,100 for Fishwick Taffera, a Heronbrook Ned Kelly daughter that changed hands with its bull calf at foot on behalf of Peter Close, Berwick on Tweed. Buyers were J.M. Grant and T. McDonnell, Longbridge herd, Easingwold.

The same buyers paid a further £3,000 for Fishwick Twilight and its heifer calf from the same home.

Averages – 4 cows, £2,425; 2 senior heifers, £1,525; 10 junior heifers, £2,755; 2 senior bulls, £4,100; 2 junior bulls, £3,850.

Rams reach 3,000gns at Skipton

AN increased entry of 811 rams was on offer at the multi-breed showcase at Skipton where a top of 3,000gns was paid for a Beltex shearling ram from Dick and Watson Harrison, Skipton, which sold to Paul Simpson, Wigglesworth.

Rams met a 91% clearance rate with a second highest price of 2,500gns paid twice - for a continental shearling from Simon Bennett, Silsden Moor, and again for a Texel shearling from Philip Weaver's Empire flock, Knapthorpe, which sold to David Swinglehirst, Stillingfleet.

Continentals from Roger and Jason Craddock, Bolton-by-Bowland, reached 2,400gns and 2,000gns.

A Texel shearling from Chris Cornthwaite, also Bolton-by-Bowland, hit 2,400gns while another from the Aiken family, Ainstable, reached 2,000gns.

Other continentals from Matthew Burleigh, Shanra, Flash House Farms, Penistone, and T.C. Whiteford, Brampton, all made 2,000gns.

Suffolks peaked at 1,300gns for the reserve champion, a shearling from John North's Loxley flock, Giggleswick, while Charollais rams reached 1,200gns for one from Josh Lawn, Thornton.

British Blues are best at Castle Douglas

BRITISH Blues from Hamish McNeil, Newton Stewart, secured the champion and reserve tickets at the sale of suckled calves at Castle Douglas before the champion, a heifer, sold for the top price of £4,000 or £10.63/kg.

With buyers in attendance from all over the country, averages were reportedly stronger than last year.

The reserve, a Blue bullock from Messrs McNeil, realised £2,040 but it was a Blue bullock from Messrs Hamilton, Port William, that topped the steers at £2,200 and 846p/kg.

Teeswaters top at 1,200gns

A RAM lamb from Bainbridge Bros, Richmond, topped the sale of Teeswaters at Leyburn when it was knocked down for 1,200gns to G. and J. Te Lintelo, Mayfield flock, Wolsingham.

Bainbridge Bros's Abbeybain flock also topped the female entry at 820gns with a gimmer lamb.

The pre-sale champion, a shearling ram from K. and S. Tyson's Derwent flock, Keswick, sold for 800gns, with that price matched by a gimmer shearling fromÌý Giles and Kieran Horner, Howe Wath flock, Whitby.

Hartley's Herdwick hits 6,000gns at Broughton

A SHEARLING ram from Anthony Hartley, Broughton-in-Furness, headed up the sale of Herdwick rams at Broughton when it sold to A.D. Harrison, Eskdale, for 6,000gns.

Other Herdwicks reached 3,000gns from Joe Weir, Cockermouth, as well as 2,200gns from Messrs Lightfoot, Glenridding.

Making 2,000gns was one from Messrs Edmondson, Cockermouth.

Swaledale rams broke the centre record not once but twice with a new high of £2,800 paid by A.J. and L. Birkett, Ambleside, for one from Tracey Lightfoot, Glenridding.

Making £2,500gns was a ram from W. and P.A. Walton and Son, Millom, which sold to K. Wrathall, Broughton-in-Furness.

Header: Champion leads Dalesbreds at Bentham

SECURING the championship and selling for the top price of £7,000 at the annual show and sale of Dalesbreds at Bentham, was a shearling ram from John Bradley's Pen-y-Ghent flock, Giggleswick.

The winner of the large breeders class, a son of the home-bred Pen-y-Ghent Cosmic, sold to Stephen and Tom Wallbank, Slaidburn.

Hitting £6,500 was an entry from M. Taylor and Son, Settle, while two made £5,500 apiece – one from Messrs Bradley and another from J.M. and C.J. Dawson, Lancaster.

The reserve champion from the small breeders class from Messrs Carr and Moran, Wigglesworth, sold to Andrew Bousfield, Barnard Castle, for £5,000.

Other entries reached £4,200 for J.T. and J. Kelsall, Clapham, and £4,000 for Bainbridge Bros, Richmond.

Ewes peaked at £500/head for a trio of three-crop ewes from J.M. and J.J. Dawson, Littledale, followed at £400/head for the first prize pen from R. Capstick and Sons, Ingleton.

The champion pen from A. and M. Brennand and Sons, Chapel-le-Dale, realised £280/head, matched by another pen from Messrs Capstick.

Shearlings peaked at £390 from P.D. Bowdin, Buckden, with gimmer lambs to £310/head for the first-prize pen from Colin Bell, Barnard Castle.

Averages - Aged rams, £598; shearling rams, £891.41; three-crop ewes, £214; two-crop ewes, £250; shearling ewes, £220.

Swaledale ewes break centre record

RECORDS were broken at the sale of Swaledale females at Kirkby Stephen when the champion pen of 10 went under the hammer at £900/head.

The leading ladies were two- and three-crops from Rob Hutchinson, Bowes, and were bought by Messrs Handley, Chapel-le-Dale.

Second highest price of £550/head was achieved by a pen of two- and three-crop ewes from Messrs Beckwith, Barras, which also sold to Messrs Handley.

Messrs Hutchinson sold further pens at £480/head to Messrs Richardson, Buxton, and Messrs Coulthard, Westgate, as well as another at £460/head to L. White, Belper.

This contributed to an average of £414.28 for 97 from Messrs Hutchinson.

Messrs Beckwith received a further £410/head for a pen of 14 which sold to Messrs Wallace, Middleton-in-Teesdale, as 92 averaged £356.74/head.

Shearling ewes topped at £330/head for the winning pen from Messrs Calverts, Keld, which sold to Messrs Ellison, Dent.

Messrs Birbeck, Kirkby Stephen, sold the winning pen of gimmer lambs for £225/head to Messrs Bindloss, Shap.

Averages - Ewes, £295.47 (+£91.86 on 2025); shearling ewes, £254.07 (+£77.51); gimmer lambs, £150.60 (+£35.19).

Kitson heifers peak at £6,500

ÌýThe Kitson's Stars production sale of in-calf, bulling and show heifers was held the evening before North East Live at Darlington, on behalf of A. Kitson and Sons, Crathorne.

Top call of £6,500 was for a red-roan Limousin cross heifer, bred by Messrs Scott, Wigton. In-calf and due in January to Harestone Ujeanluc, it sold to Fristling Hall Farm, Essex.

Selling for £6,200 was an in-calf Limousin cross heifer, bred by Messrs Ridley, Woodhall, due in February to the same sire, which sold to Gary Bell, Lockerbie.

Four more in-calf heifers sold for more than £5,000, and 11 went for between £4,000 and £5,000.

Maiden heifer trade topped at £4,800, with two taking more than £4,000. Pick of the bunch was a February 2024-born pedigree British Blue heifer, Solway Uesha, which also went to Fristling Hall Farm.

A 19-month-old British Blue-cross bred by East Anglian Trailers, Norfolk, sold to J. McAllister, Falkirk, at £4,600.

A guest trio of pedigree British Blues, from the Bowl Turner herd of D.M. Alderson, Northallerton, saw a 30-month-old heifer sell to G. Dring and Sons, Pickering for £5,800.

ÌýAverages – 24 in-calf heifers, £4,583; 25 bulling heifers, £3,525.

Barledziew Holsteins in demand

The Barledziew herd of pedigree Holsteins was dispersed on behalf of the Vance family, Newton Stewart, at Carlisle, topping at 5,800gns.
The sale topper was Barledziew Fuel Amy VG88, a second lactation cow by Melarry Fuel which was due again to Have No Fear for next spring. The buyer was Messrs Mairs, Dumfries.

The dam of this cow, Warnelview Crushabull Amy, sold milking in its fifth lactation for 3,900gns to Crossfell Holsteins, Penrith. Recently classified EX 95 for the third time, it is the highest classified daughter of Crushabull in the UK. Its April-born heifer calf, by Mystique Animation, topped the heifer calves at 3,600gns to the Dalling family, Lanarkarkshire. ÌýÌý

The Mair family also bought Barledziew Rubicon Ash for 4,500gns, due again in May to Dropbox. Its dam by Chief sold for 4,050gns, due with its third in November.Ìý

Averages - 121 cows in-milk, £2,729.73; 43 heifers in-milk, £3,261.10; 26 in-calf heifers, £2,915.77 (calving up to March 2027); 28 short-bred heifers, £1,951.87; 15 bulling heifers, £1,799; 50 heifer calves, £1,945.01.

Reserve leads Leicesters

IT was the reserve champion that topped the sale of Bluefaced Leicester rams and females at Kirkby Stephen.

Selling for £4,000 to Messrs Ainslie, Berwickshire, was the second-prize ram lamb from Messrs Lord's Hewgill flock, North Stainmore.

Next best at £3,200 was a ram lamb from Messrs Reed, Bishop Auckland, which headed to Skipton with Messrs Fawcett.

Messrs Browell, Hexham, paid £3,000 for a ram lamb from Messrs Macqueston, Thornhill.

Matching that £3,000 was a lamb from Messrs Shields, Ravenstonedale, which sold to Messrs Iveson, Hawes, with the same home selling another to Messrs Dent, Barnard Castle, for £2,800.

Also making £3,000 was the dearest of the shearlings from Messrs Dawson, Kendal, which was snapped up by Messrs Collingwood, Bishop Auckland.

Other shearlings sold to £2,900 twice – one from Messrs Carrick, Alston, to Messrs Nattrass, Alson, and another from Messrs Walton, Darlington, to Messrs Clarke, Penrith.

Messrs Dawson also sold the first-prize aged ram, a three-shear, for £2,800 to Messrs Ivinson, Penrith.

Averages - 5 aged rams, £1,740 (+£790 on 2025); 53 shearling rams, £1,250.20 (+£237.38); 106 ram lambs, £1,040.80 (+130.48).

Top of 3,950gns at dairy dispersal

DAIRY cattle peaked at 3,950gns at the on-farm dispersal of William Barnett's Oxfordshire herd.

Making top dollar was a fresh second-calver with another of the same to £3,500.

Many of the young cows sold between 3,400gns and 3,700gns.

Dry cows sold to a strong trade, topping at 3,500gns with others to 3,300gns, 3,200gns, 3,050gns and 3,000gns on five occasions.

In-calf heifers and served heifers peaked at 2,550gns three times, with others to 2,500gns and 2,350gns.

Bulling heifers hit £1,680gns while yearling heifers sold to £1,460gns. Heifer calves reached 920gns.

Averages - 256 in-milk cows and heifers, £2,737.98; 37 in-calf and served heifers, £1,888.01; 30 bulling heifers, £1531.25; 22 yearling heifers, £1,291.98; 48 heifer calves, £725.59.
