Stainton gimmer tops J36 Texel sale

TEXEL sheep peaked at 3,800gns for the pre-sale champion, a gimmer shearling from Peter Woof's Stainton flock, Kendal, at the North West Texel Breeders Club show and sale at Junction 36.

The Cowal Hawkeye daughter, which sold to Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn flock, Muirkirk, is bred from a home-bred ewe by Craig Douglas Dancer.

Next best at 3,000gns when knocked down to B.J.S. Farms, Hamsterley, was Teiglum Input, a shearling ram by Vallum Horsepower from Andrew Clark, Lanark. Placed second in the pre-sale show, its dam is by Seaford Egyptian Warrior.

Messrs Blackwood received 2,600gns from R. and E. Ladds, Kendal, for Auldhouseburn Jangles, a Midlock Inferno-sired ram lamb out of a Rhaeadr First Choice daughter.

Following on at 2,300gns when sold to J. Woodburn and Partners, Ulverston, was Uppermill Jumpstart, an Auldhouseburn Imperial King-sired lamb from David McKerrow, Ellon.

Four sold for 2,000gns apiece, with the first being Robert Laird's Cambwell Imperial 3 from Biggar. This shearling ram by Cambwell Godfather sold to T.H. Garnett and Son, Barrow In Furness.

W. Richardson and Son, Appleby, paid 2,000gns for Stumpcross Imax, an Empire Dr Feelgood-sired shearling from Christopher Cornthwaite, Clitheroe. R.P. and S. Whiteley, Kirkburton, received 2,000gns from A. Hodgson and Son, Ambleside, for their Thorncliffe Endeavour-sired Thorncliffe Imperial. The last at this price was Jeff Teward's New View gimmer by Tillycairn Hamish from Staindrop. It sold to M. and E.M. Wilson, Middleton in Teesdale.

Calves peak at £1,000 twice

A TOTAL of 705 calves sold through Market Drayton to average £469, with a top of £1,000 paid on two occasions.

Making that top price was a pair of 30-day-old British Blue bulls from J.A. and M.H. Wright, Sandbach.

Native bulls reached £780 for an Aberdeen-Angus from S. and M. Huxley and Sons, Talke, while continental heifers also reached £780 for a Charolais from Richard Vernon and Partners, Hatherton.

A Hereford from G.M. and H.J. Fern, Penkridge, topped the native heifers at £620, while Friesian bulls reached £365 from T.W. Eardley and Sons, Norton-in-Hales.

Sam's shearling ram tops Dorsets at Skipton

IT was the champion, a shearling ram from Sam Driver's Sandy Lane flock, Chisworth, that topped the Northern Dorset Breeders Club sale at Skipton when it went under the hammer at 1,600gns.

Sandy Lane Herriot, y Southbank Gussage and out of a Ballyhamage dam, was one of 21 entries bought by the Fort family, Steeton.

Selling to M.J. and L.C. Lund, Quernmore, for 1,000gns was Braithwaite Hercules, a shearling ram by Poorton Z25 from Freddie Lea, Pateley Bridge.

Messrs Fort paid 800gns for the top-price ram lamb, Paddock Leach Igniter, a Poorton Detonator son from Stuart Alderson, Ainsworth.

Stuart Alderson's female champion, a ewe lamb named Paddock Leach Ida, sold to Messrs Fort for 650gns. It is by Paddock Leach Golden Hoof.

Also selling to Messrs Fort for 650gns was a shearling gimmer daughter of Southbank Gussage from Messrs Driver.

Charity auction raises £8,815

A STEER sold through Melton Mowbray to raise money for charity was knocked down for £4,600.

The show steer donated by the Amos family was auctioned for the Air Ambulance, a charity close to the family's heart after Gordon Amos had a fall at home and suffered a head trauma as well as a double leg break.

The bullocks sold to E. Neild and Partners, Cheshire, with further items auctioned and donations taking the total raised to £8,815.

Lucky Charm ewe lamb leads at Worcester

A EWE lamb led the trade at the inaugural Three Counties Blue Texel Club sale at Worcester when Richard and Jade Bett's Yarburgh Lucky Charm attracted the top price of 2,800gns.

The Boyo Emperor-sired lamb is out of a Sunnybank ewe by Whatmore Europe from the Louth-based flock and sold to Natalie Legge, Westwood flock, Bromyard.

Sticking with the females, a shearling gimmer from the same home sold to Paula Jessop, Coalville, for 1,700gns. It is by Titanium Game On and out of a Boyo Emperor daughter.

Sophie Long, Bishops Frome, sold her Beaconsview Flash Harry-sired gimmer, Littlebrook Kylie, for 1,600gns to Hydes Farming, Thaxted.

Rams peaked at 2,600gns for the reserve male champion, a lamb named Diesel Le Bomb from Ben James, Tenbury Wells. Sired by Sunnybank Exchange Rate and out of a Whatmore Bentley daughter, Le Bomb sold to Sam Hale, Sacombe flock, Hertfordshire.

Making 2,200gns was Wind-mill Lorenzo from Vicky Bowring, Newark, which sold to Sophie Long. Its pedigree features Wind-mill Hurricane on to a ewe by Mullygarrow Grey Goose.

The male and overall champion, a shearling from G. and L. Davies' Ty Gwyn flock, Fishguard, sold to the judge, Dave Roberts, Boyo flock, Kenley, for 1,600gns. It is by Stephick High Flyer.

Averages – 1 aged ram, £1,050; 8 shearling rams, £997.50; 13 ram lambs, £924.81; 13 shearling ewes, £827.88; five ewe lambs, £1,270.50.

Dairy cattle in demand at Gisburn

A TOTAL of 31 dairy cattle made £3,000 or more at the offering of 121 through Gisburn, where a top price of £3,920 was achieved.

Making that price was a Sheland Parfect Lock daughter from A. Lawson and Son's Newbirks herd, Otley. Bred from the Remembrance family, it is out of a 14,519kg dam and changed hands giving 40kg.

Second best, at £3,800, was a Whytil heifer from J. and M. Singleton and Sons, Goosnargh. Yielding 33kg, it is by Cherry-Lily Zip Luster and out of a Delaberge Pepper dam.

Jennings Farmers, Ripon, sold a run of eight heifers to a top of £3,780 for a Sandy-Valley Conway daughter.

Making £3,680 for Messrs Lawson was a Sandy-Valley R Conway daughter from the Jazz line, which is out of an EX93-rated, 70-tonne dam and sold recording 46kg.

Trade for non-pedigree heifers reached £3,550 for the best of six from H.J. and K.L. Blackwell, Gargrave, while in-calf heifers sold to £2,700 from A.R. and C.A. Parkinson, Chipping, with bulling heifers from Mrs Kirkhams Lancashire Cheese to £1,750.

Roelcots flock sets Cotswold record

THE Cotswold record was broken more than four times at the dispersal of John and Anne Palfrey's Roelcots flock from Burton on the Water.

Held at Worcester, 30 years of breeding came to fruition with a top price of 1,200gns paid twice to share the new breed record.

The pair of twin brothers, Roelcots Hercules and Roelcots Horatio, are sired by Queensford Pete, a previous national show and sale champion. They sold to D. and R. Colwell, Moreton in Marsh, and P. Dealthwaite, Warwick, respectively.

Making 1,100gn when sold to B. Bennion, Nantwich, was another shearling ram, the Tingewick Boaz-sired Roelcots Hero.

Ram lambs reached 900gns for Roelcots Idaho, a Queensford Wilfred son that sold to M. Marsh, Shrewsbury.

Females sold to 750gns for a one-crop ewe named Queensford Aster which heads to Tewkesbury with D.J. Haynes.

Messrs Colwell paid a further 720gns for the show gimmer, Roelcots Hope, while ewe lambs peaked at 680gns for Roelcots Imogen which also sold to M. Marsh.
