Pateley Bridge champion, Mercedes from Messrs Ewbank, £5,200
Ewbanks' champion heads up Pateley Bridge
IT was the champion and reserve haltered cattle that attracted the leading prices at the show and sale of show potential cattle at Pateley Bridge.
Taking the top ticket and top price of £5,200 was a Limousin cross heifer from the Ewbank family at Middlesmoor which went on to sell to Liv Matten and Liam Rodney, Ripon.Ìý
In reserve and making £3,800 when sold to James Nisbet, Ayrshire, was a Limousin cross bullock from K. and G.J. Huck, Austwick.
Similarly, prices in the unhaltered section were also headed up by the champion and reserve as the winner, a Limousin heifer from A. Warren, Gomersal, sold locally to the Frank family, Pateley Bridge, for £3,100.
In reserve was a Limousin bullock from the same home which made £2,800 to Wagstaff Bros, York.
The sale saw heifers sell to average £2,169 with bullocks at £2,078.

OTM and clean cattle peaked at 390p per kg for a Charolais heifer from J. Bradley and Son, Dacre.
That 390p per kg was matched by a Limousin cow from J.A.S. Church, Lofthouse, which also made £2,686.

Cap is top dog at Skipton
ENTRIES from Welshman, Kevin Evans, led the sale of sheepdogs at Skipton when they went under the hammer for 10,000gns and 9,000gns.
Dearest from the Brecon-based trainer and trialist was Glebe Fort Cap, a two-year-old dog by Kevin's own multiple open winner and Welsh Nursery champion, Hendre Sam. Bred out of Tom O'Sullivan's Clare, making Cap a full brother to the £11,700 Glebe Fort Fan sold online in November, Cap sold to online buyers from Piedmont, Italy.
Earlier, Kevin received 9,000gns from a local Skipton buyer for his three-year-old bitch, Sal, which is by the 2025 International champion, Dewi Jenkins' Clwyd Bob, and out of Idris Thomas' Nel.
Close behind on 8,500gns was 13-month-old bitch, Polly, from first time vendor, James White, Ashbourne. Another by Clwyd Bob but out of David Bevan's Eva, Polly sold to Arthur Temple, Holmrook, who will aim Polly for next year's nurseries.
Eldroth-based Shaun Richards saw his five-year-old bitch named Lynn sell south to Daniel Kirk, Beaworthy, for 5,200gns. Lynn is by Arthur Temple's Ben and out Eric Jacques' Sue.

Irishman, Tim Carey, Mullingar, welcomed 4,600gns for his 11-month-old bitch, Gwen, which is full of P. Murphy's breeding being by Bobby and out of Nell. It sold to Tom McPhee, Reiss.
A small entry in the unbroken pen peaked at 780gns for a nine-month-old dog named Turk from Floyd Farthing, West Glamorgan. It is by his own Nantymoel Nip.

Dairy cattle reach £3,300 at Penrith
HEADING up the monthly sale of dairy cattle at Penrith was a second-calved British Friesian from regular consignors, R.W. and J. Bell, Wigton.
Selling 23 days calved and giving 38 litres, it made £3,300 to W.H. Brass, Low Row.
The whole sale averaged £2190 with over half the sale second calvers and older.
Next best at £3,000 was a second-calver yielding 31 litres from Messrs Livesey, Ulverston, which sold to D.E. and S.M. Moorhouse, Natland.ÌýMessrs Livesey's run of three averaged £2,767.
A consignment of third and fourth-calved Holstein Friesians from Messrs Carr, Beckfoot, peaked at £2,400 and averaged £2,217.
Heifers sold to £2,800 for a Montbeliarde cross Fleckvieh giving 33 litres from R. and E. Pattison, Brampton, which heads home with A. Johnston, Whitefold.
Messrs Fisher, Penrith, sold three fresh Holstein Friesian heifers to average £2,517 having reached £2,600.
Grazing-type Irish Friesians topped at £1,800 from Dolphenby 51AVÊÓÆµPartnership for a cow due in June to the Aberdeen-Angus.

Strong store trade at Bishops Castle
A TOTAL of eight steers and four heifers sold for more than £2,500 at the sale of store cattle at Bishops Castles, with 36 steers and 35 heifers making more than 500p/kg.
The sale peaked at £3,600 for a heifer from E. and S. Lewis and Son, Bishops Castle, which also made 626p/kg as 119 heifers cashed in to average £1,922 and 448p/kg.
The 139 steers peaked at £2,700 twice from E.H. Pennie and Son, Llandyssil, as well as 743p/kg from Bowen and Bowen, Barriew. Steers levelled at £3,042 and 460p/kg.
Store bulls (13) averaged £1,844 or 434p/kg, having peaked at £2,080 from R.F. Gough and Son, Newcastle, as well as 484p/kg from B.T. Williams ad Son, Plowden.

Good demand for native pedigrees at Melton Mowbray
A TOP price of 7,200gns was achieved at the inaugural February sale of pedigree native cattle at Melton Mowbray when the champion Aberdeen-Angus went under the hammer and a new British White breed record of 3,900gns was set.
The sale leader was Tree Bridge Pullman, a Te Mania Legend son born in April, 2024 from D. and P.A. Evans, Nunthorpe. Bred from an Oakchurch Evor-sired home-bred Polly Bridge, Pullman was knocked down to John Steel, Scotland.
Herefords peaked at 5,000gns for Pepperstock 1 Bastion, a Spartan 1 Typhoon son from Speirs Farms, Luton. Selling to W. Milner, Shropshire, it is out of a Barwise 1 Mach one daughter.
Lincoln Red bulls met a 100% clearance having peaked at 4,700gns for Hobart Dylan from A.W.J. and E.L. Bambridge, Blickling. Sired by Hemingby Andrew and out of a home-bred Auchmacoy Vulcan daughter, Dylan sold to Severalles Farms Adbury, Newbury.
Setting a new breed record for a British White of 3,900gns was Swinton Charles, a rising two-year-old son of De Beauvoir Bacchus from Andrew Lane Falshaw, Masham. Selling to T.A. and E. Brown, Ashover, the record-setter is out of a White Rose cow by Woodbastwick Diesal.Ìý

Market Drayton dairy hits £3,500
A MIXED entry of dairy cattle peaked at £3,500 for the champion at the Western Holstein Club show and sale at Market Drayton.
That was Charlton Ranger Redrose Red, a second-calver giving 42kg from J. Lomax and Son, Baldwins Gate, which has an unbroken pedigree of 11 generations of EX and VG-classified dams.
W. and J. Nadin and Co, Earl Sterndale, sold Sterndale Davinci Ashlyn, a pedigree that sold giving 49kg having calved its second a fortnight previously, realised £2,980.

Two cows made £2,780 apiece – one from R.W. and E.E. Edwards and Sons, Hanmer, as well as another from Mark Whitehurst, Market Drayton.
Heifers sold to £2,920 for Messrs Nadin;s Sterndale Rubels Trivna Red, which calved two weeks prior and changed hands yielding 31kg.
Hitting £2,820 was the first prize pedigree heifer, Heathleigh Rager Present 3 from L.F. Horton and Sons, Northwich.
Other heifers hit £2,560 from T.M. and J.M. Bowes, Wettenhall, as well as £2,450 from Messrs Whitehurst and £2,420 from Stubbs Partners, Whitgreave.
