Carry House flock sets breed recordÌý at Carlisle
AS the hammer fell on his 60 years of Bluefaced Leicester breeding, Martyn Archer's Carry House flock set a new female record of 18,000gns at the final dispersal of his Hexham-based flock of crossing types at Borderway.
With only ewe lambs from the Carry House flock on offer, setting the 18,000gns record was Carry House V3. Its sire, R27 Midlock Magic, was bought in partnership with Steel for £25,000, while its dam, S72 by P1 Carry House Ronaldo, sold for £9,000 last year. The buyer was Jamie Pirie of the Blarnavaid flock, Dryman.
Next at 7,200gns, selling to Messrs Browell and Sons, Hexham, was another by Midlock Magic, this time V44 which is out of a different Carry House Ronaldo daughter.
Messrs Armstrong, Penrith, paid 6,500gns for another Midlock Magic daughter, but out of K41 which was by G34 Midlock.
Outwith the Carry House entry, the Hunter family's Steel flock, Hexham, topped the guest consignment at 7,000gns when the T47 gimmer also by Midlock Magic sold to Jimmy and Grahame Sinclair, Midlothian. Bred from a Steel ewe by Carry House Flash, it was AI'd to V39 Midlock.
The next lot, T49, sold to Hartside Farms, Biggar, for 6,000gns. Also by Midlock Magic, it was out of a P2 Spurrigg and scanned twins to T38 Carry House.Ìý

Claybury dispersal peaks at 26,000gns
Trade peaked at 26,000gns for a ewe lamb at the dispersal of the Draper family's Claybury flock of Texels, Montford Bridge, at Shrewsbury, which had Brian Ross as guest auctioneer.
The sale leader was a January-born embryo lamb by Wedderburn Highlander out of a Strathbogie Cannonball daughter, which is a full sister to the 34,000gns Claybury Dunkirk. It was knocked down to Charlie Boden, Stockport.
The top two shearling ewes both sold to Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn flock in Ayrshire. Dearest at 17,000gns was a Haddo Fabio daughter, bred from a Claybury Delta Force ewe. It was scanned with three to Wedderburn Highlander.
At 13,000gns was another by Haddo Fabio but this time out of a different Claybury Delta Force. This one was also scanned three but to Allanfauld Italian Job.
Donor ewes hit 7,5000gns to S.P. and C.P. Williams, Wollascott flock, Shrewsbury, for a 2023-born Rhaeadr Four Square daughter carrying twins to Wedderburn Highlander. Ìý
James Theyer, Clanfield flock, Oxfordshire, paid 7,500gns for a gimmer by Cowal Firepower and out of a Wilodge Bravo daughter, which sold carrying triplets to the Allanfauld ram.

Classy Lassies top at 3,800gns
The Classy Lassies sale of crossing type Bluefaced Leicester females at Carlisle topped at 3,800gns for a ewe lamb by S006 Carry House out of a home-bred ewe from A. Brown's Macqueston flock, Thornhill, which sold to Messrs Luck and Son, Bowes.
Next at 3,500gns was a ewe lamb by S001 Seahouses, from Messrs Lord's Hewgill flock, North Stainmore. It was knocked down to Messrs Bennett and Son, Meifod. From the same home and making 2,800gns was another ewe lamb, this time by R038 Hewgill, which went to Messrs Graham, Blairdrummond.
Two gimmers from Midlock Farms, Biggar, sold for 2,500gns apiece. The first, by Firth Superted, was carrying triplets to M1 Riddings and sold to Messrs Fleming, Biggar. The other by M1 Ridings and scanned with twins to T3 Steel sold to Messrs Lawson, Carnforth.
Averages - 7 shearling gimmers, £1,920; 8 ewe hoggs, £1,975.31; 15 overall, £1,949.50.

ÌýCast ewes to £500 at Bentham
There was a flying trade for cast sheep at Betham, with ewes averaging £177.52, topping at £500/head for Andrew Atkinson, Harrogate.
Glen Wilson, Scottish Borders, sold ewes to £460, with others to £430. A consignment of 62 mainly continentals from T. Hill and R. Wright, Wadsworth, topped at £400 and averaged £304.
Strongest Texel and Suffolk cross ewes sold from £230-£280 with Rosie Wilson, Bentham, selling Suffolk crosses to £300 and averaging £245. ÌýÌý
The Ìý6,792 prime lambs averaged 356.78p/kg with an SQQ of 362.2p/kg. Handy weight export lambs saw plenty of pens 350-380p/kg with the smartest better bred lambs 400p/kg plus.
The young handlers competition was judged by Martin Hare, Tong, who awarded the championship to the winner of the short wooled section with handler under 11, Paddy Garth, Clapham. This lamb sold for £480 (1010p/kg) to Dan Towers, Wray.
In the best presented lamb and vendor, Blossom Rowland, Hope Valley, took first prize, selling for £240.

Ewe hogg sets Bluefaced Leicester traditional type record
Setting a new traditional type Bluefaced Leicester ewe hogg record of 18,000gns at the Blue Belles sale at Carlisle were Alan, Sam and Oliver McClymont's Kirkstead flock, Yarrow.
A winner at Biggar and the Scottish progeny shows, the daughter of T4 Wallholme sold toÌýOllie Jones, Y-Ddol flock,ÌýLlandrindod Wells.
The McClymonts also consigned the pre-sale show champion, a gimmer hogg by £12,000 Madrissa which was a winner at Peebles Show last year. It was knocked down in a two-way spilt to Alfie Benbow, Borderlands flock and David Kear, Three Cliffs flock, Swansea, for 11,000gns.
ÌýYester Estates, Haddington, East Lothian, bought three shearling gimmers at 5,000gns apiece, including a S001 Blythbank daughter carrying triplets to T2 Glamis from Kirkstead. The other two were from M. Seed and Son's Auchry flock, Turriff, andÌýboth by R011 Shewbridge and in-lamb to S2 West Bolton.
Also making 5,000gns was a gimmer by R002 Woodcroft in lamb to T31 Leadburnlea from D.W. Williams, Blacket House flock, Anglesey, which sold to Claish Farms, Stirling.

ÌýTexel Christmas Stars Texels top at 26,000gns
WITH six gimmers making five-figure prices, the Christmas Stars sale of Texel females at Carlisle peaked at 26,000gns with a 98% clearance and an average of £3,700.21.
Leading the way was Robert Cockburn, Crieff, whose gimmer sold for the top price to Hugh and Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn flock, Muirkirk. By 65,000gns Teiglum Goliath out of Daisy Duke, a Sportsmans Cannon Ball daughter,Ìý it sold scanned with a single to Duncryne Hakuna Matata.
Allan Wight, Biggar, paid 10,000gns for another Teiglum Goliath-sired Knap gimmer, this time out of a sister to Daisy Duke, scanned with a pair to the same sire.
The 25,000gns was paid by the Vaughan family of the Partridge Nest flock, Newcastle Under Lyne, for a Knap Grumpy daughter from the Boden family, Stockport, which was carrying a pair to the 80,000gns Harestone Incredible Hulk.
The Partridge Nest team then received 10,000gns from an undisclosed buyer for an Auldhouseburn Ghost daughter carrying a pair to Hope Valley Icon.
Two more realised 10,000gns apiece including an Allanfauld Fast and Furious daughter from Steven Renwick, Peebles, which sold to Craig Campbell, Cockermouth, carrying twins to Haddo Impressive.
Also at 10,000gns and selling in a two-way split to Auldhouseburn and Jonny Cubitt, Northern Ireland, from Robbie Wilson's Milnbank flock, Turriff, was a Clanfield Golden daughter In-lamb to the 65,000gns Auldhouseburn Imperial King.

Border Leicesters sell to 2,500gns twice
The Border Beauties sale of Border Leicester females at Carlisle topped at 2,500gns twice. Firstly, for the pre-sale show champion, a shearling gimmer by Intock Eye Catcher scanned with triplets to Silvermuir Upperclass from Robbie Aiken's Springview flock, Wennington. It had been a winner as a ewe lamb at the Great Yorkshire, Royal Highland and Royal Welsh shows and sold to Messrs Lathangie and Spon, Glenrothes.
The other at this money was a Elsricklemains Eyecatcher daughter, carrying twins to Davis Dyke Dare Devil, from D. and I. Walker's Alticane flock, Girvan, which sold to Messrs Kinloch, Biggar.
At 1,800gns, also from Springview was another Intock Eyecatcher daughter, scanned with twins to Silvermuit Upperclass, which was knocked down to Messrs Mill, Cardenden, Fife.
Also making 1,800gns was anther from Messrs Walker, this time by Westforth Braveheart and in-lamb with twins to Davis Dyke Dare Devil which sold to Messrs Lawrie, Kinross.

Duhonw dispersal peaks at 6,500gns
THE James family, Builth Wells, bowed out in style as the final part of their Duhonw Texel dispersal at Carlisle topped at 6,500gns.
Making top price was a daughter of Knap Gandolph scanned with a pair to Garngour Highlander II, Ìýwhich sold in a three-way split to Messrs Fox, Symington; Jonathan Watson, Berwick, and N.R. Edmondson, also Berwick. ÌýÌý
Two hit 5,000gns with the first, selling to James Nairey, Bank Hey flock, Blackburn, being by Teiglum Firefly and scanned with two to Dohonw Fire Cracker.
Robert Cockburn, Perth, bought the other at 5,000gns, another Knap Gandolph daughter carrying triplets to Duhonw Firecracker. Ìý
Averages – 28 shearling gimmers, £2,936.25.

Junior shepherd tops Leyburn lamb sale
ÌýThe champion in Leyburn's junior prime lamb competition went on to make the top price of £500 (893p/kg).
Picked out by judge, Eric Blacklock, Catterick, this was a 56kg Beltex from the under-12s class winner Billy Greensit, Ripon, which was bought by local livestock buyer Jack Iveson.
Also making £500 was the third prize lamb, also a Beltex, from Josie Iveson, West Burton, and which also sold to Mr Iveson.
The reserve championship went to Lydia Fairburn, Bedale, with a 54kg Beltex which made £220 (408p/kg) to Farmers Fresh (Wales), Wrexham.
