Sales round-up: Salers record at Welshpool, breeding cattle and sheep sales, sheep dogs at Skipton

Catch up with reports from recent livestock auctions including Penrith, Hawes, Skipton, Welshpool, Carlisle, Shrewsbury and Gisburn

Uhu sets Welshpool record

A YOUNG bull broke the Salers centre record at Welshpool when Rigel Uhu surpassed the previous 8,500gns record to sell for 10,000gns.

Consigned by the Rigel Pedigrees team, Yarm, this 24-month-old son of the imported French-bred bull, Rigel Podrick Poll, out of Rigel Fenella, caught the eye of G. Bufton, Hereford.

Averages significantly improved in both sections with bulls up just shy of £2,000 compared to 2025.

Two from P.M. and S.M. Donger's Seawell herd, Towcester, shared the next best price of 6,000gns. The overall champion, Seawell Umpire, which is by Seawell Ronaldo and out of Seawell Tibby, sold to Messrs Howard, Shropshire.

Seawell Ultimate, this time by Seawell Optimist and out of Seawell Radella, sold to E.W. Evans, Manafon, also for 6,000gns.

Females sold to 4,600gns for the female champion, Onley Vespa from T.J. and L.S. Roberts, Whitbourne. Selling to C.A. Jessop, Coalville, this Onley Postman Poll daughter is out of Onley Poppy.

Tirley topper at Welshpool

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD with calf at foot sold for the top price of 6,000gns to lead the Simmental offering at Welshpool.

From Steve White, Tarporley, Tirley Buttercup was by Rathnashan Lobster Pot and out of the Team Celtic-sired Tirley Jade. It sold to P. and M.A. Lovatt's Longedge herd, Stoke on Trent, with its heifer calf by Rathnashan Realbadman.

Bulls peaked at 5,500gns for Wroxall Rolls Royce, a Rendham Noble son from C.H. Evans and Son, Claverdon. This reserve champion from the pre-sale show is out of a Forsdale Gallipolo daughter and sold to C.M. Mercer who runs 300 cows in the Bowley herd, Hope Under Dinmore.

Messrs Evans welcomed a further 5,200gns from E. Agri, Telford, for Wroxall Russell, another by Rendham Noble.

Also making 5,500gns was Lambsclose Sergio which was bought as a calf at foot by G.A. and H.M. Francis, Pistyll herd, Abergorlech. Selling to S.P.R. and L. Reed and Co, Blaenamerch, its pedigree features Denizes Mombassa on to Lambsclose Jess.

Breeding cattle record set at Borderway

A NEW high for a breeding cattle outfit was seen at Carlisle when a cow and calf outfit sold for £9,500.

The Limousin cross with a bull calf was one of 49 outfits from Messrs Livingstone, Gretna, that cashed in to average £5,904. They also sold Limousin cross heifers with heifers calves for £9,000 and £8,000.

Outwith the run from Messrs Livingstone, a Limousin cross cow with heifer calf from Messrs Miller, Wigton, realised £7,000 with a Limousin cross heifer with bull calf from Messrs Malone, Leven, at £6,800.

In-calf heifers peaked at £3,100 twice for Aberdeen-Angus from Messrs Pattinson, Carlisle.

TheÌý entry of 165 bulling heifers averaged £2,192 having sold to £3,200 for a British Blue from Messrs Twentyman, Wigton, with a Limousin from the same home at £3,000.

Messrs Foley, Capheaton, also sold Limousins to £3,000 twice.

Strong demand for Hampshire Downs

A TOP of 2,500gns and an increased ram lamb average were the results of a strong demand for Hampshire Downs at Shrewsbury.

Making top dollar was the winner of the trimmed ram lamb class from Austyn Chapman and Nikkie Wadkins' Eppleby flock, Richmond. By Yarcombe Flashman and out of a Graylen ewe, it sold to James Bailey and Nikki Ramsey for their Ivanhoe flock, North Yorkshire.

The duo sold another Flashman son to Stephen Jones, Bryncoch flock, Wales, for 1,800gns.

Whitby ram lamb, 2,100gns

Rhun and Eurgain Davies, Egryn flock, Gwynedd, paid 2,100gns for a Treworthal Marshel son from Louis Stainthorpe's Whitby flock from the town itself.Ìý

Mr Stainthorpe led the female entry when his reserve female, a shearling ewe by Bridgehaugh Braveheart, sold for 1,500gns. Bred from a Thorbeck ewe, it sold to Hilary and James Strathern, Hawthorn flock, Stirling.

A Whitby ewe lamb by a Treworthal ram sold to John Grossick, Rockhall flock, Dumfries, for 1,300gns.

Shearling rams sold to 1,250gns three times for Seawell entries from Joe and Sophie Dilibero, Towcester. They sold to Messrs Strathern; Stirling, Graham Manson, Dunraven flock, Co Down; and James Dickson, Cynnen flock, Carmarthen.

Champion, Thornfalcon ewe lamb, 1,200gns

Champion at the pre-sale show was a Loughbrae Gambit-sired ewe lamb from Lucy Heywood, Thornfalcon flock, Somerset, which sold to Messrs Strathern for 1,200gns.

Averages – 20 ram lambs, £938.18; 9 shearling rams, £906.50; 13 shearling ewes, £621.92; 24 ewe lambs, £741.13.

Breeding cattle to £5,300 at Penrith

QUALITY outfits old well at the New Fair sale of breeding cattle at Penrith when a top price of £5,300 was set by a heifer with calf from J. and W. Wear, Knock.

The British Blue with Limousin-sired bull calf sold to M. Bindloss and Son, Shap, as Messrs Wear's run of eight dairy-bred Blue and Limousin cross heifers went on to average £4,637.50.

The annual consignment of 13 dairy-bred Limousin heifers with calves from J.D. and F. Wharton, Penrith, averaged £3,900 having topped at £4,400 selling to R. and R. Brass and Son, Penrith.

Jackiechan is a hit

ENTRIES from Jack Whiteford's Blackjack flock of Dutch Spotted, Brampton, topped the May Fair sale at Carlisle when they went under the hammer for 4,500gns and 3,000gns.

Dearest was Blackjack Jackiechan, a ram lamb by Milltown Ivor Williams and out of a home-bred Hazelberry Gee Wizz daughter.

It sold to Messrs Williams, East Norton, along with the next dearest at 3,000gns, a shearling gimmer,Ìý Blackjack Isobel by Hazelberry Gee Wizz.

Ali Jackson, Annan, saw his ewe lamb, Tiptop Just the One by Limestone Iceman sell to Messrs Jones, Ffairfach, for 2,200gns.ÌýÌý

A three-year-old Badger Face ewe with ewe lamb at foot from S. Braid, Moffats, led the section at 1,300gns when sold to Messrs Boyes, Annan. The ewe is by an Ingst ram while its lamb is by Knockmult Foden.

Messrs Sewell, Bishop Auckland, bought the dearest of the Blue Texels for 1,200gns – a 2022-born Pistyll ewe by Gairnrock Fully Loaded with a ram lamb at foot by Saltire Blue Jackpot from J. Geary, Hanslope.Ìý

Beltex reached 900gns for an Edendiack King-sired gimmer from Richard Wood, Biggar, which sold to Messrs Sim, Isle of Bute, while Messrs Birch, Bakewell, paid 520gns for the dearest of the Dorpers, a Knotlow Kudos-sired gimmer from J.S. and M. Hollinrake, Buxton.

Averages – Dutch Spotted – 8 ewes with lambs, £820.31; 22 weaned lambs £1,069.09; 16 shearling gimmer, £1,066.40. Badger Face – 3 ewes with lambs, £962.50; Blue Texel – 8 ewes with lambs, £892.50; 3 shearling gimmers, £665; Beltex – 8 shearling gimmers, £570.93; Dorper – 9 shearling gimmers, £437.50.


Tess is a topper

IT was bitches that attracted the top prices at Skipton's late spring in-field sale of working sheep dogs where Tess from Tony Birkett, Carnforth, led the trade at 7,800gns.

The 18-month-old black and white bitch is by Dewi Jenkins' international champion, Clwyd Bob, and out of Tony's own Mo. Tess sold to Beverley Fort, South Craven.

Mr Birkitt also received 6,400gns from Frank Hickson, Jedburgh, for another bitch out of Mo, this time the August 2023-born Sue by Ricky Hutchinson's Jim which has since sold to America.

Selling for the second highest price of 7,200gns from Rob Thackeray, Meltham, was a blue tri-colour bitch, Wholestone Bess, from Meltham. Bought as a pup from Jack Haigh, Bess is by Sam Roper's Blue and sold to Trevor Blades,Ìý

Two dogs hit 7,000gns, first was three-year-old Deo from George Simpson, Huntly. Bred by Ross Games and by his Scott, Deo sold to an undisclosed buyer.

Also at 7,000gns was Glenburn Glen, a 14-month-old from Michael McAlister, Glenariffe, which sold back across the water to Loughlin Conn, Limavady. Glen was bred by Donal McKillop and is by his Will.

Colin Birkett, Carnforth, headed up the pup entry at 800gns when his Netherbeck Lad by Sion Morgan's Moss, sold to John Plamner, Twiston.Ìý

Averages – Boken registered dogs, £5,200; broken registered bitches, £5,450; unbroken registered dogs, £1,800; unbroken registered bitches, £2,583; non-registered bitches, £450.

New Hawes hogg and lamb record

PREVIOUS market records were well and truly broken when the champion pen of hoggs with lambs sold for £720/outfit at Hawes.

The leading pen from Winter Bros, Appleby, were Mules purchased as gimmer lambs at Hawes, which sold with Suffolk-sired lambs at foot.

Winter Bros also secured the second prize for Mules with lambs which realised £450/outfit.

A pair of Badger Face Texel hoggs with gimmer lambs from M.W. and H.E. Pedley, Little Musgrave, realised £520 and £460/outfit, while the first prize pen of continentals from the same home made £490/outfit.

Ewes with lambs sold to £360/outfit for Suffolk cross ewes with twin Suffolk lambs from J.M. Dickeson, Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Swaledale ewes with twins from P.G. Sayer, Musgrave, made £355/outfit while Herdwick Mule ewes with twin Texels from G. Stephenson, Cautley, made £320/outfit.

Strong demand for milk in Gisburn sale

AT Gisburn's dairy sale a non-pedigree fresh heifer topped the price list at £3,520, while 20 of the 61 heifers or cows sold in-milk, reached £3,000 or more.

Sale leader was a 35kg first prize winning heifer from Jennings Farmers, Ripon. They also made the top price of £3,480 in the pedigree section with a Bankhouse Arthur daughter, also giving 35kg, and then took a £3,420 bid on their red rosette winner in this class, a Frazld Firebird daughter carrying the Aireburn prefix.

At £3,450 was a Stantons Adorable heifer from the Whitecarr herd of T. Cowell, Kirkham, who also sold a Drouner K & L Chase daughter at £3,400. At the same price, R. C. and S. W. Beecrof, Harrogate, sold 36kg Hollinshall Jakers Deborah 28. Also at £3,400 was Aireburn Chase Doll from G. B. Moorhouse, Skipton. Again at £3,400 was the first prize cow, a 38kg pedigree second calver, Avenham Regulus Companion 6, from J. and A. H. Rogerson, Preston.

A. R. and C. A. Parkinson, Chipping, sold 16 in-calf heifers topping the section at £2,520, £2,450 twice, and £2,420.

Averages – Pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,854; pedigree newly calved cows, £2,577; non-pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,604; non-pedigree newly calved cows, £2,320; non-pedigree in-calf heifers £2,308.
