Hewgill hogg sets breed record at Hawes Honeys sale

A new crossing-type Bluefaced Leicester female record was set at the Hawes Honeys sale when a gimmer hogg from Messrs Lord's Hewgill flock was knocked down for £22,000

Hewgill V40 from the Kirkby Stephen-based flock is by the home-bred Hewgill R38 ram that has done well for the Lord family, breeding lambs in the champion Mule gimmer lamb pen over the past two years. After some spirited bidding, the leading hogg sold to Mike Anderson, Aberdeen, for his growing Hardhaugh flock.

The Lord family also welcomed the second highest price of £10,000 for Hewgill V38 which this time is by the Hewgill T23, a son of a Sealhouses. A full sister to the £28,000 V1 sold at Hawes last autumn, it sold to Aaron Troughton, Firbank flock, Sedburgh.

Midlock T103, £8,000

Taking the championship at the pre-sale show was a gimmer shearling from Messrs Wight's Midlock flock, Biggar. Sired by the Shitlington R6 and carrying twins to the £28,000 Cottage, Midlock T103 sold to Alice Amsden, Hawes, for £8,000.

Hitting £6,200 was a Gregareth hogg byÌý Midlock T16 from David and James Lawson, Masongill, which sold to Ian Dixon, Nether Newton. Ìý

W. and J. Montgomery, Strachur, paid £3,200 for Midlock T96 which was carrying a pair to Riddings M1.

Mr Dixon paid a further £5,000 for the reserve champion, Cottage V49 from Jimmy Bell and Rachel Buckle, Lanark. It is by Drummuck T2.

The Thornborrow family, Peebles,Ìý saw their Dawyck gimmer shearlings peak at £3,500 for Dawyck T62, a Dawyck Bullseye daughter scanned a pair to the Skelgate T3.

Messrs Thornborrow led the aged ewe section with Dawyck R66, a daughter of the £65,000 Riddings P1 carrying twins to Shitlington T29. It sold to S.H., T.A. and M. Sutcliffe, Horton.

Also in the money for Dawyck was the T55 shearling, by Bullseye and scanned a pair to Hewgill T1. It sold to G.L. and M.E. Hutton, Keswick, for £3,000.

Avearages – Gimmer hoggs, £2,786; gimmer shearlings, £2,020; aged ewes, £1,245.
