Longtown Ladies peak at 5,000gns

The Longtown Ladies show and sale of pedigree Texels and other females at Longtown topped at 5,000gns for the champion, a ewe hogg from Donald MacPherson's Hexel flock, Berwick-upon-Tweed. By Knap High Flyer out of a home-bred Procters Chumba Wumba daughter, it sold to the judge, Elliot Gisbourne for his Blackdale flock, York.

The reserve champion, the winning gimmer by Saltcotes Golden Eye, in-lamb to Ettrick Hugo Boss, from Steven Renwick's Craig Doulas flock, Peebles, sold for 3,800gns, also to the judge.

John Macgregor's Allanfauld flock, Kilsyth, sold gimmers to 3,200gns and 2,800gns. At 3,200gns was a daughter of Sportmans Grand Slam, scanned in-lamb to Auldhouseburn In Business Now, which went to Ed Samuel for his Hendre flock, Herefordshire.

At 2,800gns, was a Forkins Fancy daughter, in-lamb to Harestone Indiana Jones, which sold online to Gareth Flett for his Nistaben flock, Orkney.
Also at 2,800gns from Alan Clark's from Garngour flock, Lesmahagow, was a Forkins Fancy daughter which was knocked down to Adam Mawson for his Midcombe flock, Bootle.

Robert Cockburn, Knap flock, Crieff, sold gimmers at 2,600gns and 2,400gns twice to Ali Jackson, Annan, ÌýBrandon Roth, Tolgus and Michael Dent, Frosterly, respectively.

Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn flock, Muirkirk, sold to 2,600gns and 2,200gns to Messrs Allan , Cauldcoats and Sam Beachell, Driffield, respectively.

Suffolk ewes sold to 1,800gns twice for Ali Jackson's Tiptop flock, Annan, with Dutch Spotted in-lamb gimmers to 1,400gns and 1,300gns for D. and L. Steen, Coxhill, and Blue Texels to 1,000gns.

Ballymena Bluefaced Leicester females top at 5,000gns

Due to bluetongue restrictions, the sheep forward for the show and sale of Bluefaced Leicester females at Ballymena were not eligible for export to the Republic of Ireland but could be exported to Scotland, England and Wales, resulting in 28 females finding new homes in these countries.

The champion was a ewe hogg from Graham and Julie Loughery, Temain. By Beeches Wingman 4358/R001 and out of Temain N033, it sold at the top price of 5,000gns toÌý Martin Kelly for the Freehall flock, Limavady.

Jake Hamilton, Skeagh, took the red ticket in the shearling ewe class with a home-bred daughter of Giants Causeway Armani 4456/S003 out of a Dawyck ewe, 4346/M044. It sold for 4,000gns to Robert Raw, Caparnwray flock, Lancaster.

Declan McKillop, Giants Causeway, sold a brace to 3,200gns. The first was shearling ewe by Highberries Haaland out of home-bred ewe, which sold in-lamb with twins to Giants Causeway 4456/S002 to Jimmy Bell's Cottage flock, Carluke.
The other, by Dawyck 4346/P003, sold carrying a single to Highberries Haaland to Michelle Wright for the Mullaghwee flock.

Richard Currie, Tullagh, sold a shearling ewe by 5132/S002 Ballygorian More, scanned with twins to Hewgilll 980/N008, to the Kennedy family, Mileview flock, for 3,000gns.

Averages - 70 head, £1,066.95.

British Blue leads Skipton calf trade

At the sale of rearing calves at Skipton, top price was £890 for a British Blue-cross bull from James Gooch, Cononley.

The championship went to John and Caroline Thompson and sons, Dan and Harry, Gargrave, with a Limousin-cross bull which was knocked down for £820 to the judge, Richard Umpleby, Killinghall.

The reserve champion, a seven and a half week old British Blue bull by Kersey Rhinestone from Rob and Sarah Marshall, Dacre, sold for £880.

They also consigned the first prize native bull, an Aberdeen-Angus, which topped its section at £630.

Blues also topped the heifer trade at £690 for Sam Chapman, who trades as R.M. Shackleton, Broughton. The first prize winner from J. Howard Jnr, Skipton, made £600, with the same vendor topping both Charolais sections with a £720 bull and a £670 heifer.

Johnny Peel, Gisburn, headed the Simmental bull calf prices at £700, with same way bred heifers peaking at £690 for G.D. and A. Midgley, Luddendenfoot.

The strongest weaned black and white bull calves from G. Hayton and E.C. Stocks, Bolton Abbey, regularly sold at £500-£590.

Averages up at Kirkby Stephen store cattle sale

The show and sale of 511 store cattle at Kirkby Stephen topped at £3,720 for a Limousin-cross heifer from Ben Thompson, Sedbergh.

ÌýThe judge, Andrew Ashford, Bedale, awarded the championship to the winning steer which was a 19-month-old Limousin-cross from Messrs Sowerby, Ormside, which sold for £2,520.

The same vendor sold the second prize steer, another 19-month-old Limousin-cross at £2,900, Ìýas well as other 19-month-oldÌý British Blue cross steers at £3,000, £2,980 and £2,920, an 18-month-old Limousin-cross steer at £2,850 with Limousin-cross heifers from this home topping at £2,820.

ÌýThe reserve champion, a 15-month-old Limousin-cross heifer from Messrs Anderson, Leyburn, made £2,600.

ÌýMessrs Pickles,Ìý Chapel le Dale, sold 19-month-old Limousin-cross heifers to £3,000 twice and also to £2,890 and £2,820 with their consignment of eight averaging £2,818.75.

ÌýMessrs Fawcett, South Stainmore, sold a 16-month-old British Blue-cross steer for £2,820.

Messrs Pedley, Barbon, sold the first prize bull, an 11-month-old British Blue-cross for £2,600 with their consignment of seven averaging £2,240.

Black and white steers topped at £2,055 for a pen of three from Messrs Longrigg, Appleby in Westmorland, with their run of 25 averaging £1,940.

Texels females at J36

The North West Texel Breeders Club annual show and sale of pedigree Texel females at J36 had a 100% clearance topping at 2,500gns for the champion, a shearling gimmer from Charlie Boden's Mellor Vale flock, Stockport, which sold to Miss Shuttleworth, Barbon.

A shearling gimmer from R. and E. Campbell's Cowal flock, Cockermouth, sold to P. Anderton's Tuson flock, Bamber Bridge, for 2,000gns.
Ewes sold to 2,000gns for a one-crop Strathbogie bred ewe, in-lamb to Summersyke I Predict A Riot, from Mark Collins' Logram flock, York, which sold to S.R. Symes' Anglezarke flock, Chorley.
Ewe lambs topped at 650gns for Peter Woof's Stainton flock, Kendal.

Averages – aged ewes, £1,286.25; shearling gimmers, £929.25; ewe lambs, £525.

Second calver tops Gisburn dairies

In Gisburn's first dairy sale of the new year, the first prize cow, a second calver from the Hoole herd of R. and M. Cowgill, Preston, made the top price of £3,020, when it sold to the judge, Freddie Blezard, Ribchester.

The Sassafras daughter is out of a 10,473kg Fransisco-sired dam in the herd's Akregloss family.
A fresh heifer from T. Cowell's Whitecarr herd, Kirkham, was next at £2,780. By Vogue Letsgo, the heifer is out of a superior production dam in the Dot family. From the same home, an Absolute Alley Cat heifer sold at £2,580.

A string of five heifers from R.C. and S.W. Beecroft, Killinghall, topped at £2,700 for their Hollinshall Adorable Cilla 22, while their Midas-Touch Jakers daughter in the Trintje family made £2,650. Also at £2,650 was Whytil Alcove Elizabeth 658 from J. and M. Singleton and Sons, Goosnargh. The same vendors took a £2,600 bid on their Stantons Adorable-sired Renske 137.

R.W. and M. Walker, Bradford, led the non-pedigree entries at £2,650 and had another at £2,580. J. and B. Rowland, Haighton, Preston, sold a non-pedigree fresh heifer at £2,520.

AVERAGES: Pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,377; pedigree newly calved cows, £2,506; non-pedigree newly calved heifers, £2,182; non- pedigree newly calved cows £1,986.

Store cattle in demand at Hexham

There was an entry of 675 at the New Year show and sale of store cattle at Hexham, which topped at £3,050 for the champion, a 20-month-old Limousin cross steer from Ian and Anne Hamilton, Capheaton, who also sold Limousin cross heifers to £2,480.

Messrs Walton, Flotterton, sold nine Charolais cross steers to peak at £2,960 for the second prize winner and averaged £2,652.

John Guiry, Glanton, sold a pair of 20-month-old red Limousin cross steers at £2,900 and £2,760.

The top price Aberdeen-Angus at £2,540 was a steer from Messrs Burn, Aydonshields, Ìý

The 20 Limousin cross steers aged 18 to 20 months old from Geoff Hubbuck, Hexham, topped at £2,600 to average £2,427.

In the yearling and younger cattle section, the Ballantyne brothers, Cowburn Rigg, sold steers to £2,470 and a heifer at £2,860.

Andy Thompson, East Unthank, saw his prize-winning steers sell at £2,420 and heifers to £2,850 to average £2,450 for 15 sold.

British Blue bull leads Leyburn trade at £4,000

A two-year-old registered British Blue bull from Messrs Bainbridge, Marrick, topped Leyburn's New Year show and sale of store cattle and calves at £4,000.

The black bull, Abbeybain Unbelievable, sold to J. Dixon and Sons, Downholme. The same vendors won the championship under judge Brian Phillips, Northallerton, with a 22-month-old home-bred British Blue store heifer which realised £2,920 to Michael Cleasby, Carlton Miniott.
Reserve champion was a 21-month-old Limousin heifer from L.D. Laws, Hauxwell, which made £2,510.

Auctioneer Jack Pickup said the best short keep cattle easily sold above £2,300 with longer term in excess of £2,000. Yearlings were generally £1,600 to £1,800.Ìý

Aside from the prize winners, store heifers sold to £2,560 and £2,550 for Limousins from JW Porter and Sons, Gunnerside.

Bullocks peaked at £2,600 for a 15-month-old Limousin from RW Wallis and Sons, Marske. B.R. Fawcett, Bishopdale, had a run of six Limousin and Blue steers from £2,500 to £2,390 while at £2,430, was a 13-month-old Limousin bullock from Messrs Rukin, Richmond.

Below the sale's overall top-price feeding bull, were 11- and 12-month-old Limousins at £2,660 and £2,440 from D. Lumley and Son, Crakehall.

Leading the bull stirk trade were H.T. and B.J. Thornton, Swinithwaite, with four Shorthorns from £1,360 to £1,210.

Calf trade topped at £1,100 for a three-month-old Parthenaise bull from H.M. Dent, Darlington. J. Pearson and Sons, Caldbergh, led the heifer calf trade with a two-month-old Blue at £850.

Averages - 256 cattle of all ages, £1,946; 190 rearing calves, £715.
