New Dalesbred female record set at Bentham

A new record of £1,700 for a Dalesbred female was set at the Dalesbred Sheep Breeders' Association show and sale held at Bentham for a two-shear ewe, shown by Colin and Alan Price, Longlands.

By the Bernard Gill, Yarlsber, tup 203/1108, out of a ewe by the John Dawson Field Head tup 66/527, bought as the first prize lamb from the association sale in 2012.

The ewe was carrying twins by the £5,000 Mick Carr Brackenbottom ram, 7/1671, and sold to Messrs Chandler, Kirkby Malzeard.

The show and sale of individual hill-bred sheep was topped by the champion Swaledale ewe from P.E. and K.A. Sowerby, Kirkby Stephen.

The choice of pre-sale judge, Ben Kidd, Macclesfield, was by the Bull and Cave ram C40772 and scanned with triplets to the John Bland ram B46036.

It was knocked down for £6,000 to Frank Brennand of A. and M. Brennand and Son, Chapel le Dale.

Standing second to the champion was a three-shear ewe from A. and M. Skidmore, Kirkby Stephen. Carrying twins to the home-bred ram Flakebridge Justice, it sold for £800 to I. and P. Brown, Ravenstonedale.

Champion and reserve Herdwicks both returned £500 for vendors, D. and J. Wilson, Penrith, with the champion ewe, and I.K. and A.M. Grisedale, Crooklands, with the reserve champion, a shearling.

They were bought by the judge, George Harryman, Ambleside, and Messrs Beech, Burniston, respectively. Messrs Wilson also sold Herdwick gimmer hoggs to £420 and £400.
