Sales round up: Sue tops sheep dog sale at £12,100, dairy sales hit 4,000gns, spring lamb trade remains strong

Sue tops online sheepdog sale at £12,100

A TOP price of £12,100 was paid at Skipton's online sheepdog sale for a Scottish-bred bitch. Leading the way was Sue, a full trained black and white bitch from David Wood and his partner, Emma Jane of Crookhill Sheepdogs, Bamford.

October 2023-born and bought as a pup from Ayrshire's Neil Gillon, Sue is by Boss and out of Annandale Uno. Sue picked up five second places in last year's nursery season and sold to an undisclosed buyer in Surrey.

Beacons Moss, £8,400

Welsh triallist, David Evans, Brecon, received £8,400 from Richard Harrison, Penrith, for 24-month-old Beacons Moss which is out of David's own Foxridge Gail and by Kevin Evans' Hendre Same – a multiple open winner and Welsh Nursery champion as well as part of the Welsh National brace champion.

Rising two-year-old red and white Glan y Gors Vali from Ian Carroll, Anglesey, sold to fellow Welshman, Dylan Jones, Nagor, for £6,100. It is by Gwyddil Jock and out of Glen y Gors Meg.

Another red and white, this time Sugarhill Maisy from Ellie Street, Hellifield, hit £4,700. Selling to Elaine Williamson on the Shetland Isles, Maisy is home bred out of Freebirds Roxy and by Lynn Howells' Boss.

One of two snapped up by Pauline Mitchell, Banffshire, was Rory from Robbie Taylor, Lancashire. Sired by Celyn Bob and out of Gyp, Rory realised £4,100.

Another selling to the Shetland Isles, this time to Martin Johnson, was Kemi Tip from Kevin Evans, Llwynfedwen.

Part and unbroken dogs peaked at £2,050 for Tweeddale Speck from John Atkinson, Escrick. Sired by A. McCulloch's Sam and out of D. Aiktin's Tami, Speck sold to a new home near Terrington.

Top of the pups at £1,600 was Conway-based Mia Artella's Elly Dan, a son of Dewi Jenkins' High Hills Jo which sold to Peter Simpson, Dacre.

Beef Shorthorns reach 3,400gns

Beef Shorthorns sold to 3,400gns at Longtown for Pikestone Margo Vienna by Plutarch of Upsall, an in-calf heifer from C. and J.C. Stephenson, Bishop Auckland. The buyer was L. Pearson and Sons, Northumberland.Ìý

Cows with calves at foot sold to 3,200gns, again to Messrs Pearson, for five-year-old Shawhill Rainbow Broadhooks from Shawhill Shorthorns, Lockerbie. Galla Primrose Margo, a cow with heifer calf from J. W. Frame, Little Galla, made 3,000gns from T. B. Stamper and Sons, Cockermouth.ÌýÌýCows with calves averaged £2,940.Ìý

Shorthorn maiden heifers sold to 2,900gns for Burnfoot Victoria Winnet from Hugh Sloan, Lauder. The Stonehills Stargazer daughter was bought by A.N. and H.S. Tomkins,ÌýÌýHethersgill. Overall, heifers averaged £2,152.Ìý

The bull trade was selective, selling to 3,000gns for Galla Walker from Messrs Frame and Shawhill Valentino from Shawhill Shorthorns.Ìý

A consignment of pedigree Herefords from Ian Wilkinson, Balgay Farmhouse sold to 3,500gns for Redstroke Jennifer 116, a Netherhall Planet daughter with calf at foot, which went to Pilmuir, Hawick.Ìý

A Limousin heifer with calf at foot from K. Elwen, New Pallyards realised £3,600 with Shorthorn cross heifers with calves from H. and M. Connell, Minsca, selling to £3,050 and Luing bulling heifers from G. Roddam, Humshaugh, to £1,890.Ìý

Storming dairy trade at Gisburn

A top price of £3,980 and no less than 22 others at £3,000 and above made for a tremendous trade in Gisburn's third dairy sale of the month.

Heading the prices was a pedigree Newbirks heifer from A. Lawson and Son, Arthington. Sold giving 39kg, the Melarry Fuel daughter is out of a Doorman dam in the herd's Jazz family.

At £3,900 was the champion, Aireburn Raiton Annie from G. B. Moorhouse, Skipton. Out of the 13,209kg Aytonian Annie 500, the heifer was sold giving 34kg.

A run of heifers from the Fortland herd of J. and N. Hull and Sons, Preston, sold to £3,750 for a 38kg Peak Altakevlow sired heifer and to £3,720 for a Comestar Latayo daughter.

Making £3,700 was Osbar Pepper Saphire 2 from N. E. and E. M. Bargh and Son, Osbaldeston. Out of an Applejax dam, the heifer was sold giving 39kg.

A. H. Price and Son, Clapham, Lancaster, took a £3,600 bid on their blue rosette winner, Jackbeck Adorable Holly 27. At the same price, the Lawsons sold their Newbirks Lock Raven 29 out of a Lambda dam.

Averages - Pedigree heifers, £3,021; pedigree cows, £2,420; non-pedigree heifers, £2,435; non- pedigree cows, £1,700; pedigree in-calf heifers £2,325.

Limousin bulls lead at Darlington

STORE cattle were a sharper trade on the week at Darlington where a top price of £2,440 was paid for Limousin bulls from A. and D. Proctor, Morpeth.

Messrs Procter sold another to £2,420 and averaged £2,354 for five.

Steers peaked at £2,080 for an Aberdeen-Angus from D. and M. Scott, Hexham, followed by a British Blue from the same home at £2,060.

A British Blue from J.W. Richardson, Barnard Castle, headed up the heifer entry at £2,040 while a pair of dairy-bred Blues from D.J. Enderby, Hexham, made £1,860.

Champion tops Border and Lakeland Holstein Club sale

A HEIFER from Messrs Wilson, Penrith, claimed the championship ticket and top price of 4,000gns at the June Border and Lakeland Holstein Club sale at Borderway and was one of eight entries priced at 3,300gns and above which sold to Messrs Blezard, Preston.

The sale leader was Stowbeck Tarmac Gilly which is bred from a line of cows known for high lifetime production and high classifications.

Messrs Wilson sold a total of seven heifers to average nearly £3,400.

Next at 3,800gns when sold to Tack Farms, Herefordshire, was Netherside Cruz Chersie from the Yuill family, Lanarkshire. It has a high genomic index and was one of six heifers from Messrs Yuill that averaged £3,444.

Two heifers from Richard and Sue Armstrong's Wolfa herd, Penrith, sold to Messrs Blezard. Making 3,750gns was Wolfa Adorable Fawn which is bred from nine generations of EX dams, while Wolfa Arrow Celica made 3,700gns.

Also making 3,700gns when sold to Messrs Blezard was Woodcatt Adorable Roxy, one of six that levelled at £3,265 for Messrs Horsley, Penrith.

Averages – 67 heifers, £3,118.50; 4 cows, £2,222.50; 6 in-calf heifers, £2,940.

Spring lamb trade remains strong at Penrith

A STRONG entry of spring lambsÌý resulted in a whole sale average of 450.45p/kg or £200.67/head for the 692 on offer at Penrith.

Heavy lambs continue to be sought after with all classes dearer on the week and 45kg lambs showing a £10/head lift.

They reached 521p/kg for a 42kg Texel cross Beltex from Messrs Pollock, Braithwaite, followed at 520p/kg for two Texels weighing 40kg from E.S. and D. Noble, Beckermet.

Top price per head at £272 was a 59kg Suffolk from Messrs Graves, High Hesket, with two Texels weighing 56kg from Messrs Holliday, Wigton, at £264.

Messrs Graves topped the averages at £239.31/head for 26.

A large entry of 1,230 hoggs also met a brisker trade to average 360p/kg. Topping at £258/head was a pen of four weighing 59kg from W.R. and F.D. Siddle, Edenhall, while T. Hetherington, Penrith, sold a pen of seven hoggs weighing 48kg for 450p/kg.

Messrs Hetherington sold 65 hoggs to average £232.62/head.

Sedgemoor dairy sale led by second-calver

HEADING up the June dairy sale at Sedgemoor was a second-calver named Clenchers Distefano Bounty VG86 that realised 3,700gns for Messrs Rae and Son, Ledbury, who sold another second-calver, Ledbury Ferraro Karet, for 3,250gns.

Cows from J.J. Wooldridge's Latterfield herd, Stonehouse, sold to 3,450gns for Newman Babs 2, a second-calver, with others to 3,150gns and 3,050gns.

The dispersal of cows form C.G. Capon, Isle of Wight, sold to 2,700gns for a Wilder Dynamite daughter that calved its second in May.

In-calf heifers peaked at 3,400gns twice from Dimond Farming, Yeovil, whose consignment of six averaged £3,368.75.

That 3,400gns was matched by an in-calf heifer,Ìý Beneknowle Helium Cosmopolitan 11, from P.J. Andrews, Plymouth, who sold others to 3,200gns and 3,150gns.

A run of fresh-calved heifers from Messrs Andrews sold to 3,150gns twice for Beneknowle Anne 59 as well as Beneknowle Razor Vaakje 256 with others to 3,100gns.

Messrs Andrews led the bulling heifer section at 1,450gns twice with commercial heifers from R.G. and A. Pearce, Alveston, to 1,400gns.

Averages – Calved cows, £3,218; calved heifers, £3,005; in-calf heifers, £2,713; bulling and younger heifers, £1,326; heifer calves, £704.50; Aberdeen-Angus bulls, £2,835.

Store cattle improve at Barnard Castle

ALL classes of store cattle saw an increase in trade at Barnard Castle where bullocks averaged £1,715.61 with heifers at £1,651.86.

The sale peaked at £2,290 for a Limousin from W. and J. Raine, Alston, whose run of 10 levelled at £2,129.

A Limousin from G. and M.F. Turnbull and Sons, Richmond, led the heifers at £2,250.

Native-bred cattle reached £1,900 for Shorthorn steers from W.M. Allison and Sons, Staindrop.

An increased show of feeding bulls levelled at £1,801.46 having sold to £2,220 for two Limousins – one from J.C. and J. White, Lunedale, and the other from T. and D.I. Allen and Son, Wolsingham.
