Brennand Umpire, 19,000gns
Umpire hits a home run to top Blues
BRITISH Blue bulls met a steady trade with the reserve champion, Brennand Umpire, from the Walker family, Dunsop Bridge, that sold for the top price of 19,000gns.
The 23-month-old son of Dafydd d'Ochain was champion young bull at the Border Club herd competition last year. Umpire is a maternal brother to the 18,000gns Brennand Panther sold to Norbreck Genetics, being out of the Tweeddale Ebony-sired Brennand Mandy. It was knocked down to commercial calf producers, Messrs Allinson, Barnard Castle.
With a total of 12 bulls at five-figure prices, making 17,000gns was Springhill Ulster Man, a Ridge Dean Mahogany son from James and Sam Martin, Newtownards. Selling to pedigree breeders Geoff Morgan and family, Almeley herd, Tillington, Ulster Man's dam is Springhill Razzle Dazzle, a Gitan du p'tit Mayeur daughter.
The supreme champion, as tapped out by Robert Paterson of the Dunblane-based Auchenlay herd, was Kevin Watret's Solway View Unionjack, brought out by Ali Jackson. Selling to Phil Halhead of Norbeck Genetics, Unionjack is by Mr Jackson's 22,000gns Topgun Splash and out of the Tweeddale Ironman-sired Solway View Majestic.
First of five bulls at 12,000gns was Solway View Unrivalled, a Tattoo VD Sijsloberg son from Messrs Watret, that sold to J.A. Wood and Sons, Shrewsbury.
Coul Estate, Laggan, saw their dearest sell to Aucheneck Estates, Stirling, for 12,000gns. That was Coul Blue Ultimatum, an Aultmore Maverick son.

Dragon Blues Unique by Langoureux de Fooz, from Geraint and Kim Williams, Llanwnnen, was another at 12,000gns when sold to R.J. Shennan, Girvan. It is by Langoureux de Fooz.
W.N. Lindsay, Kirriemuir, paid 12,000gns for Clifftown Unique, a Hazard VD Pannemeers son from Dylan Townend, Broughton.
Almeley Usman, a Gass Okay son from Messrs Morgan, sold to Messrs Millichap, West Glamorgan, for 12,000gns.
Females met a more buoyant trade, and it was Solway View entries that topped the sale. Selling to Dan Jones, Newtown, for 16,000gns was Solway View Ucorker, a 20-month-old Topgun Splash daughter bred from the former Great Yorkshire champion, Solway View Pearl.
The female champion, Solway View Ustar, this time by Engin d'Hontoir, sold to Christopher Dick, Carse herd, Stirling, for 15,000gns.
Rebecca Mountain, Great Ghyll herd, North Rigton, paid 12,000gns for eight-month-old Almeley Vienetta, a red and white IZ Priceless daughter from Messrs Morgan.
The reserve female from Stafford-based Paul Walker was Crackley Bank Ubelter, by Dodou, which sold to Emily South, Oxfordshire, for 10,000gns.
Averages – 47 bulls, £8,106.68; 21 heifers, £7,500; 3 recipients with calves, £6,195.
Goldies bull shines among Charolais
AN entry from Hamish Goldie, Ruthwell, proved to be the star attraction among the Charolais offering when it secured the pre-sale championship as well as the top price of 18,000gns.
A larger entry saw 10 more bulls change hands compared to last year, and it was Goldies Vodka that sold for the top price to Kevin Thomas, Moelfre herd, Castlenewydd. This September 2024-born bull is by the 28,000gns Falleninch Stormzy, while its dam is the Caylers Rocky-sired Goldies Tetley.
At 14,000gns, when sold to Messrs McClanachan and Sons, Dumfries, was first-prize winner, Whitecliffe Viking from Mark and Jayne Hayhurst, Malton. It is by a home-bred Thrunton Fairfax son, Whitecliffe Pearce, out of the Whitecliffe Highlight-sired Whitecliffe Rhys.
Roy and Neil Blyth, Elwick, saw their Marwood Vardy, a Marwood Thor son, sell to Messrs Smith, Aboyne, for 14,000gns.Ìý
Making 11,500gns was Newhouse Vodka from the Adam family, Forfar. The Ballinlare Phantom son sold to Messrs Ward, Carnforth.
Close behind on 11,000gns when sold to Messrs Ewing, Annan, was another Falleninch Stormzy son, this time Elgin Vice from the Milne family, Elgin.

Tweeddale Vandal, a Fleurieu Napoleon son from Jonathan Watson, Berwick-upon-Tweed, sold to Ted Fox, Biggar, for 10,000gns.
Messrs Watkins, Abergavenny, bought both the female champion and reserve from Kevin Watret, Annan, for 7,000gns and 9,000gns, respectively. The reserve, Annanview Ambrose, is by Harestone Monarch while Annanview Arabella is by Harestone Standfast.Ìý
Averages – 40 bulls, £7,940.62; 5 females, £5,985.
Rudolph leads Simmental offering
IT was a good debut visit to Carlisle for the Stronach family, Keith, when their Islavale Rudolph sold for the top Simmental price of 16,000gns.
Despite the increased entry, Simmental bulls sold well as six broke the five-figure barrier.
Leading the entry when sold to Jim Walker, Sanquhar, was Islavale Rudloph. It is by Coose Lincoln that has bred sons to 20,000gns, and out of Islavale Lexi, a Corskie Highlander daughter.
Andrew, Yvonne and Callum Leedham, Tarbolton, brought in 12,000gns twice for two sons of the 16,000gns Overhill House Neil that bred their 30,000gns Grangewood Romeo sold at Stirling in February.
First was the reserve champion, Grangewood Ringo, which sold to Richard Elliot, Tadcaster. Also at 12,000gns, this time selling to Messrs Ord, Morpeth, was Grangewood Sylvester.
J.C. Innes and Sons, Huntly, paid 11,000gns for the Auchorachan Kennedy-sired Newbiemains Rockafella from Jim and Patricia Goldie, Annan.
Two made 10,000gns apiece, the first of which from Alex Bulmer, Malton, was the pre-sale champion, Habton Reacher, an Islavale Lockdown son. It sold to Messrs Whiteford, Scremerston.
Also at 10,000gns, this time selling to Messrs Ramsey, Kelso, was Coolcran Spartan, a Denizes Nugget son from S.P. McDonald, Co Fermanagh.
The entry of high health females peaked at £2,500 for a two-year-old Simmental cross from Messrs Morton, Penrith, which sold to Messrs Elliot, Penrith.
Averages – 22 bulls £7,854.54; 7 high health heifers, £2,400.
Popes Princesses hit 15,000gns twice
TWO heifers from the Popes Princesses sale of Simmental heifers shared the top price of 15,000gns at the Wood family's production sale.
First for Jimmy, Vikki, Harry and Hannah Wood, Dutton, was Popes Nellys Prudence, a 26-month-old show heifer that sold to Chris White for his recently established Frogmore herd, Moreton-in-Marsh, with entries to the Royal Highland and Royal Norfolk shows. It is by the €52,000 (£45,003) Clonagh Lucky Explorer and out of the Denizes Impressive daughter, Popes Nellys Lexi.
The Stronach family, Keith, bought the other at 15,000gns, which was the 13-month-old Popes Fabulous Sapphire. Its pedigree features the 37,000gns Denizes Nugget on to the €18,000 (£15,578) Clonagh Jubilant Fabulous, a Kilbride 51AVÊÓÆµDragoon daughter.
The Nelly family proved popular as Popes Nellys Rhea, another by Clonagh Lucky Explorer, sold to the Burns family, Tippetcraig herd, High Bonnybridge, for 14,000gns.
Matching that 14,000gns was another by Clonagh Lucky Explorer. It sold in a two-way split to Alastair Dodd, Tundergarth herd, Lockerbie, and Jim and Patricia Goldie, Newbiemains herd, Annan.
Nicola Osgood and Robert Tremayne, O'so'good herd, Cranbrook, paid 13,000gns for Popes Nellys Rumour, which is another by the Clonagh bull.
Averages – 20 heifers, £8,610.
Stock bull tops Cockerington dispersal
SOME 57 years of breeding came to a conclusion for the Needham family as they dispersed their Cockerington herd of polled Charolais cattle.
The Louth-based herd run by Ralph, Alistair and Oliver Needham, peaked at 14,000gns for the Swedish-bred stock bull, Askome Ture. The four-year-old by Pharmer AV Askome and out of I.Ginny AV Askome sold to Messrs Lambert, York.
Another stock bull, three-year-old Askome Ulas, sold to Messrs Langcake, Cockermouth, for 8,500gns.
Females peaked at 10,000gns for the first of the two-year-old heifers that had run with the bull, Cockerington Valerie. Selling to Messrs Barclay, Harestone herd, Insch, it is by Simontorp Nanook and out of a home-bred Simontorp Marabou daughter.
Other Simontorp Nanook two-year-olds, Cockerington Viv and Cockerington Vimto, made 9,000gns and 8,500gns, selling to Langley 51AVÊÓÆµHoldings, Minehead, and Messrs Laughton, Orkney, respectively.
Mayo Animal Healthcare, Wrexham, paid 8,000gns for seven-year-old Cockerington Petal, a Simontorp Marabou daughter with its twin bull calves by Askome Marabou.

The similarly bred Cockerington Perle and its heifer calf by Askome Utrillo matched that 8,000gns when sold to R.S. Groundworks, Ulverston.
Also making 8,000gns when sold to Messrs Laughton was Cockerington Tye, a Simontorp Nanook daughter with bull calf by Askome Ture.
Yearling heifers peaked at 5,500gns for Cockerington Adore, an Askome Ture daughter that also sold to Messrs Barclay.Ìý
Averages – 47 cows with calves, £6,427.34; 23 two-year-old heifers, £5,044.56; 19 yearling heifers, £3,934.73; 2 stock bulls, £11,812.50.
Blondes to 7,000gns and Salers to 6,500gns
A SMALL offering of British Blonde and Salers bulls saw the champion Blonde bull from James and Peter Weightman, Peterlee, lead the entry at 7,000gns.
Sired by Gleniffer Tim and out of the Blackwater Ainsley-sired Hallfield Marianne, their Hallfield Viceroy sold to Liam Muir, Orkney.
Alistair and Sean Mitchell, Penrith, saw their Hutton Austin, an Abricot son, sell to Messrs Harrison, Newtown, for 5,500gns.Ìý
Messrs Mitchell welcomed a further 4,400gns for their Hallfield Scotty-sired heifer Hutton Abbey, which sold to Messrs Williams, Llansawel.
Leading the Salers entry was the reserve champion, Preenbank Vauban, from Bryn and Fred Robinson, Shropshire.ÌýThe 15-month-old son of Cleuchhead Ranger is out of Preenbank Lady Zena and sold to Messrs Panniers, Bishops Frame.
Messrs Donger's Obelix-sired Seawell Usher sold to Roy and Adam Crockett, Bacardi herd, Galashiels, for 6,000gns.
Females reached 3,200gns for Bertrand Facon's Gentons Va-Va-Voom, a Gentons Sargent daughter that sold to Peter Featherstone, Bidwell herd, Barsby, with a further four Gentons heifers at 3,000gns.
