First choice Holstein heifer tops Black and White sale at Carlisle

A large crowd with buyers from 23 UK counties and six countries including Switzerland resulted in a strong trade a the Black and White sale at Borderway, which averaged £4,352 per life

The top price of 15,000gns was paid outside the ring for the first choice heifer from five female pregnancies due in June, consigned by Apex Genetics, Ballymena. Selling to Emerald Isle Genetics, Co Tyrone, they will be sired by Fraholme Vec Triton-PP and out of Trent-Way Reesure Ex92, a prolific bull breeder that recorded just shy of 16,000kg in its second and goes back to many high yielding Ex dams.

At 13,000gns when sold to Rathard Holsteins, Cork, was a first choice female pregnancy by Haveitall Blakeley Hinge from TLC Genetics and Firstlook Holsteins, High Peak. They are bred from Blondin Detective Powerhouse, a daughter of Eisdale Pwrup Alongside Ex94, recently crowned reserve grand champion at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.

Carlisle-based Evening Holsteins sold Evening Sidekick Jenny From The Block, a March-born Walnutlaw Sidekick daughter, for 7,800gns to a syndicate including Blythbridge Holsteins, Peebleshire, and Marcel Egli and Kevin Schopfer, Switzerland. Bred from a regular 14-ton dam, it is a full sister to Evening Sidekick Jennifer Ex97 that stood supreme champion at AgriScot for the third year in a row. Ìý

Evening Dropbox Boom Boom, another March-born heifer this time a maternal sister to the intermediate champion Red and White at World Dairy Expo, Luck-E Altitude Attie Red, sold to Messes Owen, North Wales, for 7,000gns.

Also at 7,000gns was Wlda Potts JB Hanna Vray ET from the Armstrong family and Phil Potts, Cumbria. Selling to Messrs Awde's Broadmeadows herd, Penrith, this August-born heifer is a grand-daughter of Hanna-Vray, the grand champion at Expo Bulle in 2022 and two-time udder champion at the Swiss Expo.

Jersey heifers reached 6,500gns from the Davis family's Rivermead Addiction Candice from Devon. Reserve junior champion at the National Jersey Show, this March-born heifer is out of the grand champion at UK Dairy Day, Rivermead Ferdinand Candy 2. It sold to Messrs Jackson, Dumfries.

Averages: 48 Holstein heifers, £4630.24; 5 First Choice heifer calves, £8442; 3 Jersey heifer calves, £3955; 1ÌýAyrshire heifer calf, £4200; 1ÌýDairy Shorthorn heifer calf, £3150; 22 embryos, £603.75.
