6 ways to tell farming's story for this year's #farm24

With political change, weather woes and global conflict, farming has its fair share of challenges - sometimes these changes happen overnight, and for those outside the industry, it can be difficult to understand the impact on agriculture.Ìý

For this year's 24 Hours in Farming event, taking place on July 30, the theme is 'more than farming' to try and showcase that although farmers produce the nation's food, they also take care of the environment, raise an enormous amount of money for charity and take care of large percentage of British countryside.Ìý

How can you help tell farming's story?

  1. Choose one point - If there something that you are passionate about, plan how you want to communicate your message. Perhaps it is animal welfare and you can choose facts about British agriculture to share.

  2. Be honest - #farm24 is about positivity, but you can weave in the truthful elements too. The weather, prices, long hours - whatever it is, giving people a truthful insight of what it takes to farm is always beneficial.
  3. Good imagery - As they say, a picture tells a thousand words, so take the time to snap some good pictures to share on the day. With your stock or a picture of the glorious countryside, you want to catch people's eye.

  4. Collaborate - Over the years, more farmers have got together on #farm24 to amplify the farming message. This creates a sense of community and may just get you off the farm and give you some much needed time to socialise. Pick a topic and showcase it together.

  5. Simple language - Remember that sometimes we get stuck in our farming bubble, and not everyone understands the language we use. Keep descriptions simple and explain things as simply as possible.
  6. Be yourself - There is nothing more important than authenticity. People will watch your content because they want to hear from you, about your role in farming and your story, so be yourself. it can be a little nerve-wracking but people are interested.

OPINION: Education is needed when kids ask questions like: 'Do you just chop the meat off and then it grows back?'
