The 6R range from John Deere have been among the most popular tractors with UK farmers for more than a decade. With the 6R replacing the 6030 Series in 2011 before being expanded and updated in 2021,Ìý the next generation of both ranges has some very large boots to fill in terms of customer expectations and dealer ambitions.

Currently covering the large (2,800mm wheelbase) and extra- large (2,900mm wheelbase) machine, the major update comprises six models, with the 6R 180, 6R 200, 6R 220 and 6R 240 large frame tractors, alongside the 6R 230 and 6R 260 extra-large frame models.

Power outputs now reach 305hp with Intelligent Power Management (IPM), with the company targeting contractors and large-scale arable businesses. No changes have been announced to and of the smaller frame machines which includes the popular 6R 155 and 6R 185 models, however the current 6R 250 flagship has been widthdrawn, alongisde the other existing large and extra-large frame models.Ìý

The new flagship 6R 260 receives a new e19 full powershift transmission option alongside the existing AutoPowr CVT transmission and features dual-clutch technology for smoother gear changes and improved pulling performance. The tractor can also be fitted with an integrated central tyre inflation system (CTIS) capable of rapidly adjusting pressures to suit field or road conditions.

A maximum road speed of 40km/h or 50km/h for both transmissions will be offered.

John Deere says a key area of new model development is road transport and ride quality and has introduced a new Sport Package Pro that combines updates to the chassis, steering and braking systems. Within this package, a revised TLS Pro front axle suspension system operates with adaptive damping that automatically adjusts to speed, load and operating conditions.

Changes to the hydraulic cab suspension system include the introduction of new suspension cylinders and revised control software designed to reduce vibration, noise and harshness when operating both in the field and on the road.

The range includes the introduction of a new CommandView 4 cab which claims to provide a revised layout to provide more interior space and a more natural driving position, while changes to the cab structure claim to improve visibility to rear-mounted implements. Noise levels have also been reduced, with the manufacturer quoting an in-cab sound level of 66dB(A).

The updated CommandARM controls feature a new convenience display for adjusting machine and cab settings, while users can choose between CommandX Plus and CommandX Pro joystick controls. A new premium ‘Vision Seat' offers up to 50 degrees of swivel movement alongside electric adjustment and additional comfort features. For crop-spraying users, the platform can be factory-order with an integrated Category IV filtration system.

Further cab enhancements include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, wireless phone charging, multiple USB-C charging ports, a larger refrigerated storage compartment and a more powerful air conditioning system.

Precision farming technology forms a major part of the range update. All tractors will leave the factory equipped with a StarFire 7500 receiver, G5 CommandCenter display and JDLink modem. This hardware provides access to a wide range of digital farming tools and automation features, activated through software licences according to customer requirements.

Available technologies include AutoPath guidance, AutoTrac turn automation, Passive Implement Guidance and machine-to-machine data sharing. John Deere says contractors will benefit from automated work reports and wireless data transfer to the Operations Center platform, reducing administration and improving job documentation.
