OPINION: Rival auctioneers are competitors but not enemies

It is just a week until the nominations for the Mart's The Heart Awards close, so if you haven't already please take a moment to put forward either an auctioneer, a young auctioneer or a market café to give them a chance of winning one of our prestigious awards.

After last year's success, we once again have the More Than a Mart award which aims to showcase a market which really goes above and beyond for the local community – not just in terms of trading livestock but what else they do for their customers but for the whole locality. It doesn't have to be a big market as often those smaller marts in more rural places are the ones which really are the centre of rural life. So, again please nominate a market you think worthy of this award.

Make your nomination

Markets and auctioneers who are short listed for any of the awards, plus many others, usually take tables at the British Farming Awards, where the Mart's The Heart awards are presented, and I can assure you their presence really does add to the great atmosphere on the night!

It has become real highlight on their calendar and is a chance for them to catch up with others in the industry.

An auctioneer once said to me that other auctioneers ‘are competitors but not enemies' which is very true and it is always good to see the banter and camaraderie between them on the night, no matter who wins the awards.
