OPINION: Auction marts give farmers flexibility on when they buy and sell

Farmers Guardian has proudly supported auction marts for more than 180 years, and today they are just as important, if not more so, than ever before.

The devastating outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001, which forced markets to close for an extended period, could have dealt a fatal blow. Instead, in a testament to their resilience and value, the majority of marts quickly resumed trading once restrictions lifted.

COVID-19 presented another major challenge. Yet again, markets proved their worth, continuing to operate and reinforcing farmers' trust at a time when stability was critical.

One of the key strengths of auction marts is their flexibility. Farmers can buy and sell all types of livestock at almost any stage of production, allowing them to adapt to changing circumstances, whether that is fluctuating grass supplies, cashflow pressures or a change in personal circumstances.

However, marts are far more than just places to trade livestock. In uncertain times, when farming, and the wider world, faces ongoing challenges, they serve as vital social hubs: places to meet like-minded people, share experiences, and, importantly, take a break from the isolation of farm life.

That is why, in 2015, Farmers Guardian launched the Mart's The Heart Awards. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, with nominations and votes increasing year on year.

This year's categories include Auctioneer of the Year, Young Auctioneer of the Year, Auction Café of the Year, and the More Than a Mart Award.

Nominations open on Friday, May 1. Full details can be found in this week's Farmers Guardian and online at BritishFarmingAwards.co.uk/martstheheart.

So please, get involved and show your support for your favourite market, auctioneer, and café.
