Q&A: Life on the land with Alice Grammer

Q: Can you outline your farming setup?听

A:听I'm听a sixth-generation farmer running around 280 beef cows, alongside roughly 60 acres of arable land. We grow all our own barley and carry out all听tractor听work in-house, which gives us a fair amount of control over timings and workload.听

Q: Do you carry out work beyond your own holding?听
A: Yes, during the summer months I do some contracting work for other farmers, which fits around our own听workload听and听I've听recently passed my Class One driving test, so听I'm听also driving lorries for our family haulage business.听

Q: What does a typical working day involve?听
A: No two days are ever the same. Most mornings begin with feeding and bedding the cows, then the rest of the day depends on priorities. Tuesdays are spent separating cattle for market, as we sell on Wednesdays.听At the moment,听there's听also a focus on tidying and cleaning up the yard.听

Q: What are your current priorities on farm?听
A:听We're听trying to get concreting and infrastructure jobs completed before conditions deteriorate. There's also still fieldwork to finish, alongside the usual repairs and maintenance that come with running a farm.听

听

"In winter I just layer up 鈥 the waterproofs do the rest."听

Q:听Do you have anything exciting projects coming up?听
A: Yes,听we've听got an upcoming project with Severn Trent and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. The plan is to replace old fencing and plant new hedgerows to improve habitats and increase biodiversity around the farm.听

Q: How long have you been using听Kaiwaka听clothing?听
A:听I've听been wearing it for a few years now.听It's听been consistently reliable, which is why I was happy to be involved in the campaign.听

Q: Where can people follow your farming journey?听
A: I share what听I'm听doing day to day under , and YouTube. The content reflects whatever work is happening on the farm at the time.

Alice has been wearing听Kaiwaka听for years听and has been consistently听impressed with听its听reliability,听so when听Farmers Guardian听got in touch with听her about the exciting rebrand that was hitting the UK听she was听really keen听to get involved.听FG听asked for her opinions on the听Kaiwaka听gear and why it helps her on the farm.听听

Q: How important is reliable workwear in your role?听
A:听It's听essential. I need clothing that can cope with a full day outside, whether听that's听feeding stock, washing trailers or handling cattle, without having to change throughout the day.听

Q: What stands out to you about听Kaiwaka听waterproofs?听
A: Their versatility. I can put them on first thing in the morning and wear them right through until the end of the day, whatever the job.听They're听also听very durable, which is important given the conditions听they're听used in.听

The magnetic strip on the coat is a big plus. When your hands are cold after working in the rain,听it's听far easier than dealing with buttons or fastenings.听

I wear them daily through winter. I layer up underneath when听it's听cold, but the waterproofs do听a good job听of keeping both moisture and dirt off. Outside of winter, I can usually get away with just a T-shirt or light jumper underneath.听

Q: Do you have any practical advice when it comes to farm workwear?听
A: Always keep food in your pockets. Jobs can overrun, and听it's听easy to get caught out with no access to food when听you're听busy.听
