Limestone gimmer shines at Black Magic sale
A GIMMER from Mark Priestley's Limestone flock, Downpatrick, led the Black Magic online sale of Suffolk females when it sold for £14,000.
Setting a flock record when sold to Ben Lynch of Ernevalley Livestock, Co Cavan, the Malinhead Cannonball daughter, named Posh Spice, stood champion at the Northern Ireland Championships at Armagh where it also claimed the sheep inter-breed title. It is out of a home-bred daughter of Cairnton Chaos.
Two from Kirkby Stephen-based Lilia Hutchinson's Howgillfoot flock were next when a gimmer realised £8,000 and a ewe lamb hit £4,600. Selling to Oliver Watson, Irtvale flock, Cumbria, was a gimmer by the 28,000gns Castleisle Blackadder and out of a Pyeston Real Deal daughter.
The Howgillfoot ewe lamb, which is by the 40,000gns Howgillfoot Royal Mint and out of a Crewelands Captain Crusader daughter, sold internationally to Messrs Elder, Kansas.
Up next at £2,800 when sold to Messrs McClellan, Co Down, was a Craigdoo gimmer by Birness The Gladiator from Patrick Grant, also Co Down.

Two made £2,500, with the first of these being a Maidenstone Magician-sired gimmer from Jim Innes' Strathbogie flock, Huntly. It sold to Messrs Wylie, West Lothian.
Matching that £2,500 when sold to Messrs Brilly, Co Kildare, was a ewe lamb by Malinhead Del Boy from Keith Johnston's Rossbrook flock, Co Fermanagh.Ìý

Winton Holstein sale hits 6,000gns
A TOP of 6,000gns was paid at the sale of the Waring family's Winton Holstein herd held on-farm near Beverley, where 17 cows sold in excess of 4,000gns.
Hitting the top price was Winton Sidekick Ghost, an EX91-rated cow that sold to Izzy Lee for her Silversparkle herd, York.
Next, at 5,600gns when sold to Brian Moorhouse, Aireburn herd, Skipton, was Winton Pepper Cutie Ex91, which sold fresh in its third lactation.

Making 5,400gns was Winton Renegade Express VG87, a second-calver which sold to an undisclosed buyer in Shropshire.
In-calf heifers topped at 4,600gns when Tom Riley, Charnock, paid that for Winton Rubels Cutes, with 23 in-calf heifers making more than 3,000gns.
Maiden heifers sold to 4,200gns for the maternal sister to the top price in-calf heifer, Winton Animation Cutes, which sold to J. Burrow and Sons, Stardale herd, Preston.
Dry cows sold well and were led by the only Jersey cow on offer, Cherryview My Casino Lacey VG85, which made 3,700gns selling to the Davis family, Rivermead herd, Devon.
Other dry cows sold to 3,600gns for Winton Octane Dellia 2, and again for Winton King Doc Tippy 2.
Aubrey and Ed Hosegood, Devon, bought the dearest of the heifer calves, Winton Mellencamp Ghost 2, for 2,300gns.

Weight pays at Penrith
WEIGHT continued to attract premium prices at Penrith, where the offering of 777 prime lambs set a whole-sale average of 427p/kg or £186/head.
Selling for the top price of 525p/kg was a pen of four Texels weighing 44kg, from R.A. Crichton, Whitehaven, followed at 522p/kg by a single Suffolk weighing 46kg, from R.J. and R.J. Benson, Penrith.
The run of 60 Texel and Suffolk lambs, from Messrs Crichton averaged 460p/kg or £200.65/head at 43kg.
A top of £265/head was paid for a single Texel weighing 58kg, from J.E. and L.M Raine and Son, Penrith, followed at £262/head by a pair of 55kg Suffolks, from D.W. Cannon and Son, Kirkby Thore.
Messrs Cannon sold a run of 49 well-fed lambs to average 466p/kg or £228.55/head at 49kg, but it was Messrs Bensons' five lambs that led the averages at £236.80/head.
A reduced entry of 424 hoggs averaged 343p/kg or £165/head, having sold to 400p/kg for a pen of six Suffolks weighing 50kg, from T. Armstrong and Son, Calthwaite, who also topped the gross trade at £236/head for a trio of 68kg Suffolks.

Limousins to 10,000gns at Borderway
A LIMOUSIN bull from the Goldie family's Goldies herd, Dumfries, continued the family's leading ways at Borderway when Goldies Aero sold for the top price of 10,000gns.
Selling to Messrs Reed, Frosterley, January 2025-born Aero is by Burnbank Sergeant out of the Goldies Orinocco-sired heifer, Goldies Truffle, which goes back to Goldies Fragrance.

Messrs Chapman and Son, Helsington, paid 8,500gns for Ringway Vatanen, a 22-month-old son of Knock Msport out of a Fieldson Alfy daughter, from P.J. Henshall, Lockerbie.Ìý
Close behind were two at 8,000gns, including another Knock Msport son, Wanthwaite VIP, this time from Tom and Keith Bell, Keswick, which sold to Messrs Taylor, Asby.
Matching that when sold to Messrs Annett and Son, Morpeth, was Fieldson VAT, a Glenrock Redemption son, from J.W. and M.C. Fieldson, Gainsborough.
Messrs Bellas and Son, Barnard Castle, paid 7,200gns for Andrew Ewing's Loosebeare Reece son, Fairywater Viz, from Annan.

Lucky Clover leads Breeders Showcase
ENTRIES from Dave Roberts' Shrewsbury-based Boyo flock attracted the top three prices in the online Breeders Showcase sale.
Selling for the top price of £6,000 was a 2024-registered Charollais ewe, Boyo Clover, which sold to Messrs Foster, Omagh.ÌýSired by Tullyear Artemis and out of Edstaston Azalea, Clover was champion at last year's Royal Three Counties Show and followed that up with the breed and inter-breed titles at this year's Shropshire Show.
A 2023-registered Charollais ewe, Boyo Betty Boo, sold to Messrs Turner, Newtown, for £4,800.ÌýBreed champion at this year's Royal Three Counties Show, it is by Foxhill Va Va Voom and out of a Tullyear ewe.
A Badger Face Texel ram lamb, Boyo Hitman, realised £4,200 and sold in a three-way split to Messrs Millen, Coleraine; Messrs Allen and Shortt, Omagh; and Messrs Flanagan, Keady.ÌýSired by Ardstewart Exchange Rate and out of Woodies Earwig, it was reserve champion at Shropshire Show.
Two Dutch Spotted females from Ali Dodd's Tundergarth flock, Lockerbie, sold for £1,700 apiece. First when sold to Messrs Metcalfe, Leighton, was Tundergarth Indigo, which is by Derg Hat-trick.
Matching that when sold to Messrs Girvan, Orkney, was Tundergarth J-Lo, which is a Rigghead Inspire daughter.
Messrs Crombie, Falkirk, paid £1,600 for a Blue Texel ram lamb by a Sunnybank ram in the shape of Boyo Lucifer from Messrs Roberts, with the £1,600 matched by a Dutch Spotted, Tundergarth Just Perfect, a Blackjack I Am Titanium daughter from Messrs Dodd which sold to Messrs Nunnerley, Shropshire.
Other breeds reached £1,400 for Ali Jackson, Annan, with a Rouge gimmer, Tiptop Daisy Day. This Tullyvalley Schumacher daughter sold to Messrs Bailey, Keighley.

Airedale Angus sale hits 7,500gns
A TOP of 7,500gns was paid at the Isherwood family's production sale of their Airedale herd of Aberdeen-Angus held on-farm near Kildwick.
The sale leader was Airedale Pastareilla X745, an Airedale Prairie Lad daughter, which sold with its fourth calf at foot, an April-born heifer, which sold to Messrs Holgate, Rathmell.
Following close behind at 7,200gns when sold to P. Allen, Scotland, was Airedale Katemoss Z821, a heifer by Airedale Lord Sinden which changed hands with its April-born bull calf at foot.

Mr Allen bought a further two for 6,500gns and 6,000gns – Airedale Rosie Ruth Y760 with heifer calf and Airedale Miss Essence Y763, again with heifer calf.
The autumn-calving portion peaked at 5,500gns for Airedale Prairie W670, a six-year-old Duncanziemere Edwin daughter due with its seventh in November to Airedale Patermall A877.
Airedale Elon, an Airedale Mr Essen son bred from the Ellie family, led the young bull offering at 5,000gns while maiden heifers reached 3,400gns for Airedale Eliza B952.

Second-calver leads dairy offering
STAR attraction at the Western Holstein Club show and sale at Market Drayton was a second-calver, Summerfields Mitchell Sara, from Summerfields Holsteins, Whitmore, which claimed the championship and sold for the top price of £3,900.
The first prize heifer, Alcar Iris 52,Ìý from W.A. and C.G. Oakes, Byley, topped the heifer section at £3,720.
Messrs Oakes sold further entries at £3,650, £3,620 and £3,600 as their run of 13 averaged £3,325.
The first and second prize commercial heifers from R. and J. Madders, Adbaston, made £3,500 apiece.
In total, 20 milkers sold for more than £3,000, with 10 above £3,500, as in-calf heifers peaked at £2,200 with heifer calves to £290.
Bulls reached £3,500 for a 26-month-old Simmental.

Store trade improves at Darlington
STORE cattle were dearer, selling to a top of £2,230 at the offering of 55 steers and 77 heifers at Darlington.
Leading the entry was a pair of 15-month-old Aberdeen-Angus steers from G.M. Elstob, Northallerton.
This was followed at £2,080 twice – for a 16-month-old Beef Shorthorn steer from J. and E.M. Lawson, Mordon, and again for a 23-month-old Limousin steer from P.J. Glass, Middleton-in-Teesdale.

Heifers reached £2,070 for a pair of two year olds – one Simmental and one Limousin – from R.L. Walker, Barnard Castle.
Trade for rearing calves was described as colossal, as the 49 averaged £654.82,Ìý peaking at £920 for a two-month-old suckler-bred Limousin bull calf from G.W. Chapman, Hamsterley.

Sowerbys lamb leaders at High Fives sale   
LAMBS from G. Sowerby, Appley-in-Westmorland, won all three sections of the High Fives show and sale of prime lambs at Kirkby Stephen.Ìý
Selling for the top price of £231/head and 561.5p/kg was the reserve champion pen, five Beltex weighing 45kg.Ìý
Messrs Sowerby's champion pen of 39kg Beltex realised £219/head.Ìý
Heading up the Suffolk section was Messrs Sowerby's 49kg pen at £223/head with Messrs Sowerby's 46kg Texels leading the class at £220/head.Ìý
