Firefighters came to the rescue of two heifers which had managed to enter a slurry pit at a farm in Dorset.

Crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said they had arrived at the farm on Sunday (February 25) around 10am in Silton after two cows had found themselves in a 'sticky situation'.

At the time of their arrival, only one of the heifers had entered the slurry pit.

The farmer then helped to free the stranded animal alongside the use of a telehandler which had been safely brought back to land.听

The farmer said the second heifer had managed to enter the slurry pit while they had saved the first.

For the second rescue, Dorset firefighters used an inflatable mud path and slide boards to reach the cow before sliding it to the edge and up onto the bank.

Crews said the cow had been too tired to stand so farm machinery had been operated to lift the animal over a fence and into a barn.听

Both cows were left in the care of the farmer and have made a full recovery since.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a farm at Silton at 10am (25 February) to help two heifers in a slurry pit.

"A crew from Gillingham and a technical rescue team from Poole attended, one heifer was brought to safety by the farmer using a telehandler, the other was brought to safety by firefighters using animal rescue equipment and an inflatable raft for access.

"Our stop was at 1.09pm and both cows were left in the care of the farmer."
