FCN raises awareness of rural support in 25 mile sponsored walk

The Farming Community Network (FCN) has raised over £500 in a 25 mile sponsored walk to celebrate 25 years of helping those in need.

FCN assistant coordinator Joanne Jones completed the hike across mid Devon (May 24) and was joined for 10 miles by fellow coordinator Colin Smallacombe, who said the event had been ‘vital' for providing continued support to farming businesses.

Speaking of the financial pressure many farming charities faced due to the cancellation of fundraising events because of Covid-19, Ms Jones said: "As a charity, we rely on public donations.

"And with our original fundraising plans, which would have seen 10 young and old farmers complete a 25 mile hike across Dartmoor, put on hold, it is important to raise awareness of the essential work FCN do."

Philip Wilson, head of operations at FCN, highlighted events such as these would go some way in easing cashflow issues following the cancellation of major agricultural events, which had previously provided opportunities for fundraising and promotion.

"This is especially the case when we consider that 57 cent of helpline calls have been coronavirus related," he said.
