Skiptons opening show and sale of gimmer shearlings saw 4,770 head sell to an overall all-breeds average of £177.43, well up on the previous years £152.05.

Average up by £25/head at Skipton's opening shearling sale

Skipton's opening show and sale of gimmer shearlings saw 4,770 head sell to an overall all-breeds average of £177.43, well up on the previous year's £152.05.  

The winning pen of continental shearlings, 10 pure Texels from Thomas Boothman, Linton, sold for £300/head to T.H. and K. Wood, High Birstwith.

The second and third prize pens from Richard and Mark Ireland, Whalley, and Owen Wells, Monyash both made £215.  

The winning pen of North of England Mule shearlings from the Greenhalgh family, Bashall Eves, sold for £230/head, with the second prize pen from the same vendors making £232/head to T. and I. Moran, Hellifield, with their consignment of 100 Mules averaging £195.90.

The Masham Sheep Breeders Association show was won for the third time running by W.D. Douthwaite and Partners, Kirkby Overblow, with their pen of 10 selling for £205/head. Their third prize pen topped the section at £208/head to M.A. Whinn, Kendal.

Cheviot Mules topped at £195/head for pens from Will Wildman and W.M. Bland, both Kirkby Malham. The first prize winners from J.W. Hall and Son, Darnbrook, made £180/head.  

Trade for Suffolk crosses was similar lines to Cheviot Mules, with the better sheep in the £170s and £180s, apart from a pen from Messrs Webster, Cracoe, which made £350 each.  

Top price among the Beltex shearlings was £230 for a pen from the Heseltive family, Bolton Abbey.

Averages - Texel, £185 (+£31 on 2020); North of England Mules, £176 (+£26); Mashams, £187 (+£30.38); Cheviot Mules, £173.37; Suffolks, £174.66 (+£23.47); Beltex, £170; Charollais, £190.
